Rose's probing words seemed designed to subtly point out something more.
"That's not true, Mom." Hailey bit her lip. "Don't listen to that nonsense."
"Well, if it's not true, why is York so hesitant to come over? You're pregnant, it would be perfectly fine for you to stay at our place. We could even help take care of York."
York frowned slightly. Hearing a sudden noise, he stopped in his tracks and saw Mrs. Jordan shouting frantically by the side of the road not far ahead.
Hailey followed his gaze and looked surprised. "Isn't that Gillian's mother? Why isn't she in the hospital? What is she doing here?"
At that exact moment, Gillian rushed downstairs, completely out of breath. She spotted her mother, and immediately after, she saw York standing with Hailey and Rose.
Gillian's entire body stiffened. She hadn't expected to run into them here, of all places.
Seeing her mother acting delirious and muttering nonsense, her only thought was to get her away from there as quickly as possible.
She walked over and grabbed her mother's hand. "Mom, let's go home."
"No!" The moment Mrs. Jordan saw York, she violently yanked her hand free from Gillian's grasp. She lunged straight at him, grabbing the collar of his shirt. "Why are you with another woman?"
York's brow furrowed.
Rose was horrified. This was her perfect son-in-law. She quickly stepped forward, shoved Mrs. Jordan away, and slapped her hard across the face.
The slap echoed sharply in the air. Rose glared at her with pure venom. "Get the hell away from him!"
As she spoke, she shoved Mrs. Jordan again, pushing her roughly to the ground.
Gillian's heart trembled. She immediately dropped to her knees to help her mother up.
When she stood back up, her gaze toward Rose was ice-cold. "Apologize."
"Apologize?" Rose looked at her as if she had lost her mind, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "You let a lunatic roam the streets instead of locking her up at home, and you want me to apologize? If she had hurt my son-in-law, could you even afford to pay for it?"
