"If you succeed, she succeeds."
His answer was cryptic.
Gillian interpreted it to mean that his friend had failed, but because Gillian reminded him of her, helping Gillian win would bring him a sense of closure.
"Miles mentioned you've taken over one of his hospitals, and it's currently desperately short on medical equipment. Is that right?" Xavier suddenly asked.
"Yes," Gillian admitted openly. "A hospital relies on the skill of its doctors, but also on the precision of its instruments. If the equipment is outdated, we can only treat minor ailments. For anything serious, we have to refer patients to larger hospitals. Without upgrades, the hospital's growth prospects are incredibly bleak."
"Then your hospital needs investors. Having the right channels means nothing without capital." Xavier offered a practical suggestion. "I'm meeting a major healthcare investor tonight. Do you want to come with me?"
He was essentially handing her a golden opportunity on a silver platter. There was no way she could refuse. She smiled. "I would be honored."

Gillian and Xavier drove to Blackwood Penitentiary to check on her father.
Marcus Jordan was in poor health, and his mental state had deteriorated significantly recently.
Marcus looked at his daughter with weary, defeated eyes, his voice choked with emotion. "Gillian, go live your own life. Stop worrying about me. I've dragged this family down enough. You all need to stop trying to save me..."
"Dad," Gillian said, her heart twisting painfully in her chest. "We're family. Please don't say things like that."
His hair had gone completely gray. He shook his head at her. "Listen to me, Gillian. You can't get me out. What happened back then wasn't that simple..."
The people in power had orchestrated everything, ensuring he would rot in prison forever.
He took a ragged breath. "Don't involve yourself in this mess anymore. Seeing you live a good life is all I want. If you keep digging into my case, they'll make my life in here a living hell."
"Be a good girl. I will carry the burden for our family alone. Take care of your mother, and wait for Parrish to return..."
