Gillian never expected York to show up in the middle of the night.
He strode over to the bed and sat down, his gaze impassive. "You called yesterday asking if I'd come. You weren't expecting me today?"
He was still wearing his trench coat, looking travel-worn. Raindrops clung to his hair and shoulders, making it clear he had braved the storm to get here.
Gillian didn't believe he would endure a thunderstorm at this hour just to make small talk.
To her, York wasn't that kind of man.
He would never make a special trip for something he deemed trivial.
"Are you here to humiliate me?" Gillian looked up at him. The man's face was calm and composed, his features sharp and strikingly handsome.
"I just finished working late. I was passing by." York's Adam's apple bobbed. "You can't sleep? Because of your father?"
Gillian turned her head away. "I thought you didn't care."
"Did I ever say that?" York chuckled mockingly. "You're quite ungrateful. I handle the online backlash for you, and you immediately accuse me of not caring?"
Gillian paused, keeping her mouth shut.
"I keep my word." His eyes darkened as they locked onto her. "You don't want to do anything tonight?"
His voice was low and magnetic, laced with heavy implication.
But Gillian had zero desire tonight.
She stayed exactly where she was, refusing to speak.
The man scoffed. "Your father was transferred to Eastwood Memorial tonight. You can visit him tomorrow. Get some sleep."
With that, he stood up and walked out.
Gillian trembled slightly, watching his retreating figure. He looked as cold and distant as ever.
Did he really come all this way just to tell her that?
A moment later, her phone buzzed with a message from him.
[Don't overthink things while you're pregnant. Sleep well. Visit your father tomorrow and get your prenatal checkup while you're at the hospital. I've already booked it for you.]
Gillian gripped her phone tightly, her lips turning pale.
Every single thing he did was for the sake of the baby. It had absolutely nothing to do with her.
Gillian closed her eyes, her entire body shaking. Her grip on the phone tightened until her knuckles turned white, as if trying to crush the device into pieces.
She had let him go. She had accepted it a long time ago.
Yet, facing York's choices and his ruthless indifference still sent an unspeakable stab of pain through her heart.
-
The next morning.
After the nanny arrived to watch her mother, Gillian headed straight to the hospital.
Her father's condition had stabilized significantly after receiving treatment the night before.
