3:00 AM.
During his layover, York turned on his phone and was immediately greeted by over a dozen missed calls from Gillian.
He frowned slightly. Just as he was about to call back, Julian's name flashed on the screen. The secretary frantically reported that Gillian's apartment was engulfed in flames and she was fighting for her life.
York stiffened, his mind going completely blank for a few agonizing seconds. His heart seemingly stopped in his chest.
When he finally spoke, his voice trembled. "Do whatever it takes to guarantee her safety!"
Hanging up, York didn't even leave the airport. He immediately booked the first flight back.
The moment he landed.
The usually composed man sprinted out of the airport and reached the hospital in record time.
By this time, Gillian had been rushed into the emergency room.
Outside the ER, Miles Stanton and Xavier Sterling stood with grim expressions.
Seeing York arrive, Julian Thorne hurried over. "Mrs. Jordan went into the kitchen to cook after your wife fell asleep, and it started a fire—"
York took a deep breath, his voice laced with poorly concealed terror. "How long has she been in there? Why isn't she out yet?"
He frowned, his dark eyes fixated on the ER doors, looking as though he wanted to tear them down and drag Gillian out himself.
Since stepping out of the car, he had run the entire way, his breathing ragged and uneven.
"Two hours," Julian comforted him cautiously. "Ms. Jordan has a strong spirit. She'll be fine."
"Also... Mr. Foster, while your wife was trapped in the fire, she received a critical condition notice regarding her father. She was trying to call you to authorize a specialized medical team for him..."
Weighing his words, Julian continued, "Your father-in-law suffered a severe heart attack exactly one hour after your mother visited him. They couldn't save him."
York's breath hitched. Marcus Jordan was dead.
He fell silent for a long moment.
