Through the thick smoke, she saw the kitchen was fully ablaze. Roaring flames licked at the doorway, illuminating Mrs. Jordan's panicked, frantic silhouette.
Covering her face, Gillian rushed forward and grabbed her mother's hand. She tried to pull her toward the front door, but a terrifying wave of fire swept toward them. The blistering heat was impossible to withstand, forcing her to stumble back several steps.
Her brow furrowed in agony; the radiant heat felt as if it were melting her skin.
Gillian immediately dragged her mother back into the bedroom, slammed the door shut, and dialed 911.
They lived on the eighteenth floor, and the windows were bolted with heavy security bars. There was absolutely no way out.
If the fire wasn't extinguished in time, they would be burned alive.
Mrs. Jordan was covered in soot, her hair singed and curled, reeking of burnt protein.
Gillian looked at her, unable to hold back a desperate scream, "Mom! What were you doing?!"
Mrs. Jordan stared back with timid, terrified eyes. Seeing her mother trembling like a frightened animal, Gillian felt a painful lump form in her throat, suffocating her.
All the harsh reprimands she wanted to scream died on her tongue.
What right did she have to yell? Her mother's mental state was fragile. This disaster was a direct result of her own failure to supervise her properly.
Seeing the look in her daughter's eyes, Mrs. Jordan stammered, "I... I saw York here last night. I wanted to make breakfast for you both..."
Her voice trembled with grievance. "I hadn't seen York in so long. He works so hard, and he finally had time to visit. I just wanted to cook for him, but the kitchen just caught fire..."
Gillian's heart squeezed painfully, a bitter sorrow burning in her chest. A heavy, suffocating weight pressed down on her lungs.
The nearest fire station was miles away.
Gillian desperately stuffed clothes into the gaps under the door, but she could feel the agonizing, scorching heat bleeding into the room.
Just as she finished sealing the cracks, her phone rang.
It was Eastwood Memorial Hospital. She knew the number by heart.
Gillian's grip tightened as she answered immediately.
"Ms. Jordan, your father had a sudden, massive cardiac event. He's in the ER right now. His heart has stopped several times, and the chances of resuscitation are extremely low. You need to get here immediately."
Boom—
The news struck her like a lightning bolt, tearing her world apart.
It drained every ounce of strength from her body. Her legs went weak, and she nearly dropped the phone. "Please save him... please..."
