When Gillian arrived at the ward with the breakfast, York was peeling an apple for Hailey, his features softened with absolute tenderness.
Hailey watched Gillian walk in with a bright smile. "Gillian, I'm so sorry to trouble you. Making you bring me breakfast this early."
She placed the food on the table without a word.
York chimed in. "She took the money, so she has to do the work. What trouble is there?"
Hailey gave a coy smile, then suddenly made a suggestion.
"Gillian, the rumors out there are still going crazy, so you can't go back to the clinic right now. Why don't you act as a nanny for York and me during this time? You can take care of our daily needs. Plus, you're my obstetrician. This way, York and I will feel completely safe about the baby in my belly."
Hailey turned to York as she spoke. "York, do you think that works?"
The man gently handed the peeled apple to Hailey. "Whatever you want."
York then looked at Gillian. "Name your price for taking care of Hailey."
Gillian stood rooted to the spot, a suffocating wave of despair washing over her.
She had given up on York a long time ago. Now, in her current situation, she had absolutely no source of income.
And yet, she had to stand here and endure their humiliation.
She finally spoke. "Sorry, I'm not available."
Hailey blinked, looking slightly taken aback. "Are you refusing to take care of me because you're still mad at me?"
Gillian looked at her and laughed. "Why would I be that petty?"
"Then why..."
Before Hailey could finish her sentence, Gillian turned and walked out of the room.
York followed her out and grabbed her wrist.
She snatched her hand back and turned to face him. "Is there something you need?"
"Afraid to take care of Hailey?" York stared at her. "Are you scared of getting jealous seeing how sweet we are together?"
