Chapter 111 Whispers In The Dark
Alpha Damian’s POV
The banquet was finally winding down.
Finished
The elaborate feast had given way to softer conversation, the orchestra exchanging lively dinner music for slow, elegant melodies that drifted through the halls of Stonehedge Estate.
Crystal glasses clinked together.
Council members gathered into familiar circles.
Political alliances were quietly negotiated over half-finished bottles of expensive wine.
Across the ballroom, my grandfather had become the center of another heated discussion. Several elderly Alphas and council elders surrounded him, debating the sudden shift in pack leadership with all the seriousness of wolves who believed every decision shaped the future.
They weren’t wrong.
But for once…
I had little interest in politics.
My attention rested on the woman walking beside me.
I guided Flourish away from the crowded ballroom, leading her through one of the quieter marble corridors that connected to the estate’s private wing.
The further we walked, the quieter everything became.
The distant music faded behind us.
The scent of rich food disappeared, replaced by cool stone and the faint fragrance of blooming night flowers drifting in through the open windows.
Beside me, Flourish let out a long, exhausted sigh.
“I feel like I just survived a war.”
I looked down at her.
The tension she’d carried throughout the banquet had finally begun to melt away.
“You handled yourself remarkably well.”

She laughed quietly.
“I nearly choked in front of half the territory.”
“You recovered.”
“Barely.”
“You recovered.”
She glanced sideways at me before smiling.
“Is that your professional assessment?”
“It is.”
Moonlight poured through the tall glass windows, washing over her face in pale silver.
She looked…
Beautiful.
Not because of the elegant dress.
Not because of the carefully styled hair.
Because she had remained composed while every powerful wolf in the room scrutinized her.
Most people would have broken beneath that pressure.
She hadn’t.
“My wolf,” I admitted, “is still irritated.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“About what?”
“The number of males looking at you.”
A laugh escaped her before she could stop it.
“They weren’t looking at me.”
“They were.”

“They were looking at you, Damian.”
“They looked at both of us.”
She shook her head.
:
“You practically threw a grenade into the ballroom when you called me your Luna.”
“I stated what is inevitable.”
“There you go again.”
“What?”
“Talking like the future has already happened.”
“It has.”
She stopped walking long enough to stare at me.
“You really don’t hear yourself, do you?”
“I hear myself perfectly.”
“You sound impossibly confident.”
“I am.”
“And if I wanted to argue?”
“You would.”
“I might.”
“You won’t.”
A smile tugged at her lips.
“You are unbelievably stubborn.”
“So I’ve been told.”
“Repeatedly, I imagine.”
“Usually by my grandfather.”
That earned another laugh.

The sound echoed softly through the otherwise empty corridor.
It was lighter than before.
Freer.
I preferred hearing that laugh to listening to a room full of politicians praise my leadership.
We reached a pair of elegant French doors overlooking one of the estate’s secluded gardens.
Moonlight spilled across the balcony beyond, illuminating rows of white roses swaying gently in the summer breeze.
I stopped beside the doors.
“So…”
She folded her arms.
“So?”
“Are you angry with me?”
Her expression softened.
“For claiming me?”
“Yes.”
She considered the question longer than I expected.
“I was embarrassed.”
“I noticed.”
“I also wanted to disappear.”
“I noticed that too.”
“And…”
She looked away toward the moonlit garden.
“…I didn’t hate it.”
Warm satisfaction spread through my chest.

Neither did my wolf.
He practically stretched beneath my skin, pleased beyond reason.
“I suspected as much.”
She narrowed her eyes.
“You sound very pleased with yourself.”
“I am.”
“I walked right into that answer.”
“You did.”
Before either of us could say anything else, the heavy echo of approaching footsteps shattered the peaceful silence.
Fast.
Unsteady.
Angry.
My instincts sharpened instantly.
Flourish turned toward the sound just as a familiar voice echoed through the hallway.
“Flourish!”
Harold.
He emerged from the shadows with an uneven stride, his suit jacket hanging open and his movements lacking their usual precision.
The sharp scent of whiskey reached us before he did.
Alcohol.
Frustration.
Jealousy.
His wolf was barely restrained, its agitation leaking through his aura in sloppy, uncontrolled
waves.

Behind him hurried Phina.
Unlike Harold, she looked frightened.
Or at least she wanted everyone to think she was.
“Harold, stop it!” she hissed, reaching for his arm. “We shouldn’t be back here!”
He jerked away so violently that she nearly stumbled.
“Shut up, Phina!”
His bloodshot eyes locked onto Flourish.
Nothing else existed for him.
“Flourish.”
His voice cracked.
“You can’t honestly be doing this.”
He took another step.
“Look at me.”
I moved before she could.
One step.
Then another.
Until I stood completely between them.
My shoulders blocked his view of her entirely.
Behind me, I sensed Flourish remain perfectly still.
My wolf surged upward immediately.
Mine.
Protect.
The growl that escaped my chest was low enough to vibrate through the marble beneath our
!feet.

The hallway itself seemed to tremble.
“You are stepping out of line, Harold.”
My voice dropped into an Alpha command.
Power rolled through every word.
The air grew heavy.
Even the distant night breeze seemed to stop.
“Leave.”
Harold’s jaw tightened.
For a brief second, instinct forced his wolf to submit.
I saw it.
He felt it.
Then pride won the battle.
He sneered.
“She spent six years chasing me, Damian.”
His voice rose.
“Six years.”
His finger pointed past me.
“She doesn’t love you.”
Silence.
“She’s using you.”
Another step.
“She’s only trying to make me jealous.”
He laughed bitterly.

“And you’re blind enough to believe her.”
Behind him, Phina rushed forward again.
“Harold, please!”
This time tears filled her eyes.
Convincing tears.
If I hadn’t smelled her emotions, I might have believed them.
Beneath the false panic lingered something much darker.
Hatred.
She looked around my shoulder toward Flourish.
“Flourish…”
Her voice softened with fake sympathy.
“If you have any dignity left, stop embarrassing yourself.”
She shook her head dramatically.
“You’re forcing yourself into a world you don’t belong in.”
She reached toward Harold.
“He’s only upset because you’re ruining our engagement party plans.”
For several seconds…
No one spoke.
Then Flourish stepped around me.
Gracefully.
Calmly.
Completely unafraid.
“I chased a shadow for six years, Harold.”
Her voice was quiet.
