My father did not answer immediately, and the silence confirmed that whatever he had hidden was worse than anything I had already imagined. Lydia stood beside the desk with her hands clasped together, while my wolf watched both of them and catalogued every change in their breathing.

“Your mother loved you,” my father finally said.

I stared at him.

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“I know.”

“Then answer me.”

His eyes dropped to the diary.

“Your mother came from the Voss bloodline.”

“I know that now.”

“She was the last recognized female heir.”

“I know that too.”

He looked up sharply.

“Who told you?”

“Mira.”

Lydia closed her eyes.

My father looked furious for a moment, but the anger disappeared when he saw my expression.

“She had no right.”

“Neither did you.”

My wolf pressed forward, and my eyes shifted briefly toward gold before I forced the change back. My father noticed it, and his face tightened.

“I never wanted you to know any of this.”

“That was never your decision.”

He sat down slowly.

“Your mother had obligations to her family that she refused to fulfill after she married me.”

“What obligations?”

“She was expected to return to them after giving birth.”

“Why?”

“Because the Voss bloodline had no other female heir.”

I stared at him.

“She was going to leave me?”

“No.” The answer came immediately.

“She was going to take you with her.”

My breathing stopped for a second.

“Then why didn’t she?”

“Because she was pregnant again.”

I remembered the diary.

My mother had written about another pregnancy. My wolf went completely still.

“That was the child she was talking about.”

My father nodded.

“She wanted to keep the pregnancy.”

“But she asked about ending it.”

“Yes.”

“Because of your affair.”

His face tightened. “Yes.”

The word came out quietly.

I looked away. “Who was she?”

Lydia moved slightly but my father did not.

“The woman you betrayed my mother with.”

He rubbed a hand over his face. “It was not someone important.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“It was someone from the pack.”

“Her name.”

Lydia suddenly spoke.

“Phina.”

I turned toward her. She looked frightened and my father shot her an angry glance.

“You should not have said that.”

“You were never going to tell her.”

My wolf reacted to the name.

Phina.

The beta’s widow.

Rowan’s widow.

The woman whose name had surfaced in other matters surrounding Stonehedge.

I looked between them.

“Phina was the woman you had an affair with?”

My father remained silent.

Lydia answered for him. “Yes.”

I felt my claws extend.

“So my mother’s death was connected to the same woman who is now causing problems inside Stonehedge?”

“We don’t know that,” my father said quickly.

“But you know she is involved.”

“I know she has reasons to hate this family.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother died.”

My father stood again.

“Phina blamed your mother for everything that happened after the affair.”

“That doesn’t explain the vehicle.”

His expression changed.

There it was.

Fear.

“Your father has been protecting Phina,” Lydia said.

“Stop,” he warned.

I turned toward her.

“From what?”

Lydia’s lips parted, but she said nothing.

My father moved toward me.

“Flourish, you need to leave this alone.”

“Why?”

“Because you don’t understand what you’re dealing with.”

“I understand enough.”

“No, you don’t.”

His voice had authority now, the Alpha command buried beneath it. My wolf immediately pushed back.

A warning growl left my throat before I could stop it. My father froze. I had never challenged his command before.

This time, I did not lower my eyes.

“I am not a child.”

His expression hardened.

“And you are still my daughter.”

“That doesn’t give you the right to control me.”

My phone vibrated, I pulled it from my pocket.

Damian.

“We found the missing authorization trail.”

I opened the message.

“The clearance was used three times. Two were connected to the mountain operation. The third was used six months ago.”

My heart tightened.

I typed.

“Where?”

His answer came immediately.

“Voss territory.”

I looked at my father.

He saw my expression and knew.

“Who is messaging you?”

I ignored him.

Another message appeared.

“There’s more. The clearance wasn’t registered under Garret alone.”
