The security officer’s words left the room silent, and I immediately looked at Flourish because her reaction mattered more to me than anything else.

She stood completely still, the color draining from her face while her wolf pushed violently against her skin, and I could feel the panic she was trying to suppress through the change in her

scent.

“He’s dead?” Her voice was barely audible.

The officer nodded. “We found him in the underground parking lot about three minutes ago.”

I stepped closer to Flourish and caught her hand before her knees could weaken. “Don’t go there alone.”

She looked at me. “I need to see him.”

“I’ll go with you.”

Lydia moved toward us. “Don’t.”

Flourish turned sharply. “Why?”

Lydia’s expression had gone tense. “If Garret is dead, then whoever killed him may still be nearby.”

My wolf reacted immediately to the warning. She was right. The underground parking lot was part of F-Tech’s building, and whoever had managed to kill Garret there had either followed him or gained access without being noticed.

More importantly, he’d been alive when we left the Steele Residence, which meant someone had reached him within a short window.

I looked at Rhys. “Lock every entrance.”

He nodded immediately. “Already doing it.”

“Nobody leaves this building.”

“Understood.”

Flourish tightened her fingers around mine. “Damian.”

I looked at her. “I know,” I said, before she could finish. Then, lowering my voice, “But you stay beside me.”

Her eyes softened. “Okay.”

We moved through the corridor together, Lydia following behind us while Rhys ordered security to secure the elevators. My wolf stayed alert the entire descent, catching every unfamiliar scent lingering in the building.

The parking level was unusually quiet. Too quiet.

The security officer stopped several meters from a dark vehicle. “He’s there.”

Flourish’s grip tightened around mine. I stepped forward first.

Garret lay beside the driver’s door, one hand against his chest, eyes closed, a dark stain spreading across the front of his shirt. There was no visible weapon near him, but the scent of blood was fresh enough that my wolf knew immediately he hadn’t been dead for long.

Flourish moved past me. “Father.”

I caught her before she reached him. “Wait.”

She looked at me, tears already filling her eyes. “That’s my father.”

“I know.”

I crouched beside Garret and checked his pulse. Nothing. I touched his neck again. Still nothing. My wolf caught another scent beneath the blood.

Poison.

I looked at Lydia. “Did you know?”

She shook her head. “No.”

Flourish crouched beside me. “Is he dead?”

“Yes.”

Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She stared at Garret for several seconds before lowering her head. “He was going to tell me.”

My chest tightened. “What?”

“He was finally going to tell me everything.”

I reached for her hand. “He still may have left something behind.”

Her eyes lifted. “How?”

“People who expect danger usually prepare.”

I searched Garret’s clothes carefully and found his phone inside his jacket. The screen was locked.

Flourish noticed it immediately. “His phone.”

I handed it to her. She stared at the screen. “There was a message.”

“From whom?”

She unlocked it with his fingerprint, and the last conversation opened. The sender was unknown.

‘You should have destroyed Elara’s pages when you had the chance.

Flourish stopped breathing. Another message appeared beneath it.

‘Now you will pay for keeping the truth from her.

My wolf growled. Flourish’s fingers trembled. “He knew.”

Lydia stepped closer. “He knew about the pages.”

“And whoever sent this knew too.”

I checked the time. The message had been sent twelve minutes ago. Garret had died less than ten minutes later. My wolf went restless. Someone had been close. Very close.

I stood. “Search the parking level.”

Security moved immediately. Flourish remained beside Garret, her shoulders shaking once before she forced them still.

I crouched in front of her. “Look at me.”

She did.

“You don’t have to hold everything in.”

Her eyes filled completely. “I hated him for what he did to my mother.”

“I know.”

“I wanted him to tell me the truth.”

“I know.”

“And now he’s dead before I could ask him everything.”

I pulled her against my chest. She resisted for only a second before burying her face against me. My wolf settled around hers, and I held her tightly.

“You didn’t do this.”

She gripped my shirt. “I know.” Her voice broke. “But it still hurts.”

I kissed the top of her head. “You don’t have to be strong with me.”

She stayed against me for several seconds before pulling away, her expression suddenly changing. “Damian.”

“What?”

She looked toward Garret. “His hand.”

I followed her gaze. Garret’s fingers were curled around something. I carefully opened them.

A small metal key lay inside his palm, a symbol engraved across its face.

The Voss crescent.

Lydia inhaled sharply. “Where did he get that?”

Flourish took it. “I’ve seen this.”

“Where?”

“In my mother’s diary.”
