The moment Phina finished speaking, the last bit of patience I had for her disappeared, and I turned my attention back to the sales associate as though she hadn’t said anything at all.
I pulled out my phone, completed the payment, and watched the confirmation appear on the screen before taking the neatly wrapped box from the counter.
Phina’s smile widened when she saw the total, and she folded her arms as she looked at the small package in my hand. “Flourish, you’re buying something that cheap for your boyfriend?”
I finally looked at her. She smiled sweetly, though her eyes were full of mockery. “I’m here with Harold today to choose our wedding rings, and if he sees what I bought, he’d probably be upset.”
The sales associate’s expression tightened, and I could tell she was growing uncomfortable with the conversation. I ignored Phina and slipped the receipt into my bag.
She wasn’t finished. “Are you still angry with me?”
I looked at her quietly. “I understand.”
She tilted her head. “You still have feelings for Harold, don’t you?”
My wolf growled at the sound of his name, especially coming from someone determined to provoke me.
I tightened my fingers around the shopping bag and reminded myself that Damian had never asked me to fight every battle with my claws.
“Men like Harold aren’t easy to find anymore,” Phina went on, smiling. “He has the looks, the position, the family name, and everything else a woman could want.”
My expression stayed cold.
“But
you should have some self-respect,” she said, leaning closer. “Being another woman’s mate is embarrassing enough, but trying to become someone’s mistress is worse.”
The sales associate’s eyes widened, and I could practically hear the judgment forming in her mind. That was enough. I turned fully toward Phina.
“Are you finished?”
She blinked. “What?”

“You’ve been talking for several minutes,” I said, stepping closer. “If you’re trying to make me jealous, you’re wasting your time.”
Her smile faltered, and I lifted my chin. “Harold has nothing to do with my life anymore.” My wolf settled slightly at the thought of Damian. “My mate is Damian.”
Phina’s expression changed at once, and the sales associate looked between us, clearly surprised.
“And unlike you, I don’t need to insult another woman to convince myself my relationship is secure.”
Phina’s face reddened. “You-” She raised her hand.
I caught her wrist before she could touch me. Her eyes widened when my grip tightened, and a low growl escaped my throat before I could stop it.
“Don’t.”
My wolf pushed against my skin, and the faint change in my eyes made her confidence disappear for a second. She pulled her arm free. “Let go of me.”
I released her. Then she slapped me.
The sound cracked through the store, and the sales associate gasped. My cheek stung, but my wolf reacted faster than my mind could. I caught Phina’s wrist and slapped her right back across the face.
She stumbled backward, clutching her cheek. “You hit me!”
“Yes,” I said calmly. “You hit me first.”
Her eyes filled with fury. “I’m calling the police!”
I folded my arms. “Go ahead.”
She pointed at me. “I’ll make sure you lose everything.”
A cold smile touched my lips. “You should think carefully before doing that.” I lifted my phone. “I recorded our conversation.” Her expression froze. “The store has cameras, and the staff heard everything.”
I stepped closer. “So if you want to report me, make sure you’re prepared to explain what happened before the slap.”
The sales associate nodded quickly. “Ma’am, we have security footage.”

Phina’s face darkened further. She looked around, realized nobody was taking her side, and stormed out of the store.
I watched her leave without feeling a shred of guilt, and my wolf finally relaxed. The sales associate covered her mouth, clearly struggling not to smile.
“Ma’am, would you like me to call security?”
I shook my head. “No, she’ll be fine.”
I picked up my bag and left. By the time I reached home, the encounter barely lingered in my thoughts.
I placed the wrapped couple rings on the dining table and looked at them for a few seconds, but something about leaving them there felt wrong. I picked the box back up and carried it upstairs.
Damian’s scent still lingered in our bedroom, familiar enough to calm my wolf instantly.
I placed the gift carefully on his nightstand, then looked at it again, imagining the expression on his face when he opened it. Despite everything at the store, I smiled.
“Consider it a thank you,” I said quietly, and turned off the light before heading down to the study to finish some F-Tech paperwork.
I lost track of time until I heard the front door open downstairs, and my wolf lifted at the familiar scent moving through the house.
I stayed at my desk, listening as Damian’s footsteps paused near the hallway, his voice carrying faintly through the door as his phone rang and he answered it.
I only caught pieces of the conversation. His tone was light, almost amused, and at one point I heard him say the word mate, followed by a short laugh I recognized as Zean’s voice through the speaker.
I smiled to myself without meaning to, going back to my documents rather than eavesdrop any further.
A few minutes later, his footsteps came down the hall toward the study, and the door opened.
“Flourish?”
looked up from my desk. “You’re back.”
He walked toward me, lifting his hand so I could see the ring already on his finger. “You bought me something.”
