The elevator doors closed, trapping me inside with Alpha Damian and Beta Rhys, but the silence between Damian and me felt heavier than the tension surrounding the pack.
He stood beside me without saying anything, his expression controlled, but I could feel the restrained force of his Alpha presence pressing against my senses.
I glanced at him before looking away.
He had barely acknowledged me since we entered the elevator, and I couldn’t understand why.
The last time I had seen him, he had held me against his chest while promising that nothing would happen to me, and now he behaved as if I were a stranger.
My wolf shifted uneasily. She could sense him even when he refused to look at me.”
I folded my arms and tried to ignore the uncomfortable feeling building inside my
chest.
“Alpha Damian,” Rhys suddenly said, breaking the silence, “the eastern patrol has sent another report.”
Damian’s eyes remained fixed on the elevator doors.
“Go on.”
“The warriors found traces of blood near the southern path.”
My stomach tightened.
Damian’s jaw hardened. “Whose?”
“We don’t know yet.”
The elevator continued downward.
Damian finally turned his head toward Rhys. “Have the trackers identify it before anyone touches the area.”
Rhys nodded. “And double the guards around Lady Flourish’s quarters.”
I looked at Damian.
He didn’t look back.

I couldn’t hold it anymore. “Why are you acting like this?”
Rhys immediately lowered his eyes.
Damian’s expression didn’t change. “Like what?”
“Like you’re angry with me.”
“I’m not angry.”
“You haven’t looked at me since you entered the elevator.”
His jaw flexed. “Because we’re not alone.”
I stared at him.
That answer made even less sense.
Rhys cleared his throat quietly. “I can leave when we reach the next floor.”
Damian shot him a look. “Don’t.”
Rhys immediately became silent.
I almost laughed despite the situation. The elevator stopped on the fifth floor.
The doors opened, but Damian didn’t move.
I stepped forward. His hand suddenly caught my wrist.
I looked back.
His fingers loosened slightly when he saw my expression.
“Stay.”
My heart skipped.
Rhys stepped out, giving us privacy without being asked.
The doors closed again.
Damian turned toward me.
“Did you know your father was connected to this?”

I frowned.
“What?”
“Alpha Garret.”
His voice was low.
“The First Alpha knew him.”
I swallowed.
“I told you. My father has been hiding things from me for years.”
“That isn’t what I’m asking.”
His eyes fixed on mine.
“Did he ever tell you about this place?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Damian studied my face.
I could tell he was trying to determine whether I was lying.
The distrust hurt.
“You think I’m hiding something from you?”
“I think everyone around you has been hiding something.”
His voice softened.
“And I don’t know how much danger you’re actually in.”
I stepped closer. “Then don’t push me away.”
Something changed in his expression.
His hand moved to my waist. “I wasn’t pushing you away.”
“You were.”
“I was trying not to lose control.”

My brows knitted. “Why?”
His eyes darkened. “Because I heard what happened while you were with Rhys.”
I blinked.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
“Damian.”
He exhaled sharply. “The guards told me Beta Rhys stayed beside you during the inspection.”
I stared at him. “You’re jealous?”
His expression became unreadable. “I don’t like other men being close to you.”
A small smile touched my lips. “Even Rhys?”
“Especially Rhys.”
I laughed softly. “He’s my manager.”
“I know.”
“He isn’t interested in me.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you angry?”
He leaned closer. “Because you’re my
mate.”
The words made my smile disappear. His thumb moved slowly across my waist.
“I can control my wolf. I can control my temper. But I don’t want to pretend I don’t care when someone gets too close to you.”
I placed my hand against his chest.
“Then stop pretending.”
His eyes softened.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
