Chapter 223 At Work

Lady Flourish’s POV

The eastern army had not attacked again before midnight, but the threat they left behind had changed everything inside Stonehedge, and I barely slept before morning came.

The words from the previous night remained in my mind, especially the warning that I had until midnight to decide which family would survive.

I sat at the long table in the temporary command room with my laptop open while Beta Rhys placed another set of documents beside me.

“The F-Tech files are still the same ones we recovered from the attack,” he said. “But there are inconsistencies in the merger documents.”

I looked down at the pages.

“How serious?”

“Serious enough that I want you to review them yourself.”

I nodded and pulled the first document closer.

Since the attack, every part of my life had become connected to Stonehedge’s enemies, and I no longer trusted coincidences.

The attempted kidnapping, the attack on F-Tech, the eastern army surrounding the territory, and the ancient power beneath Stonehedge were too closely connected.

Rhys watched me for a moment before speaking again.

“You should rest.”

“I rested.”

“You slept for less than three hours.”

“I said I rested.”

His mouth tightened, but he knew better than to argue with me when my mind was made up.

The door opened, and one of the Dartwood representatives entered with several files under his arm. His name was Kael, and he had been assisting with the legal and financial records since the F-Tech attack.

He placed the documents on the table.

“The revised agreements are here.”

“Thank you.”

His gaze remained on me for several seconds longer than necessary.

I noticed it, but I chose not to react.

Rhys noticed it too.

His expression changed almost immediately.

“Kael, how is your mate?”

Kael blinked.

“My mate?”

“Yes.”

Kael cleared his throat. “She’s well.”

“Good. I heard you have a young pup too.”

Kael nodded. “She’s six months old.”

Rhys smiled politely.

“Then you have enough to keep you busy.”

Kael laughed awkwardly.

“I suppose so.”

Rhys leaned back in his chair, but his eyes remained on him.

I almost smiled.

Rhys had always been observant, but there was something about the way he was looking at Kael that told me he had already made a conclusion I had not bothered making.

When Kael finally left, Rhys exhaled.

“That was uncomfortable.”

I looked at him.

“What was?”

“He was staring at you.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Was he?”

“Yes.”

I returned my attention to the documents.

“Maybe he was trying to read the report.”

“From across the table?”

I couldn’t stop the small smile that appeared.

“Rhys, focus.”

“I am focused.”

He folded his arms.

“That’s why I’m telling you to be careful.”

I knew what he meant.

The moment people discovered my connection to Damian, everyone suddenly had an opinion about my marriage, my position, and my future.

Rhys picked up another document.

“Actually, there’s something else.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“I know this isn’t the best time, but you can’t spend your entire life surrounded by pack politics

and war.”

I stared at him.

“Rhys.”

“Listen first.”

He sighed.

“I know someone suitable. He’s a young prosecutor from one of the allied territories. Twenty- nine, intelligent, unmarried, and from a respectable bloodline.”

I nearly laughed.

“You are trying to find me a husband?”

“No.”

He paused. “Technically, I’m trying to introduce you to someone.”

“While I’m married?”

His expression changed. “I forgot.”

I

gave him a look. “You forgot that I have a husband?”

“When you say it like that, it sounds bad.”

“It is bad.”

He rubbed his forehead. “Fine. I was only trying to help.”

I shook my head and returned to the merger documents.

“I don’t need help finding a mate.”

“I know.”

His voice became quieter.

“But after everything that has happened to you, I don’t want you trusting the wrong person again.”

My fingers stopped moving. For a moment, I couldn’t answer. He was right about one thing.

I had trusted people before, and that trust had cost me more than I wanted to admit.

But Damian was different.

Whatever had brought us together, whatever secrets surrounded my blood, I knew what I felt whenever he stood beside me. I knew how my wolf reacted to his presence, and I knew I no

longer wanted to imagine my future without him.

Rhys cleared his throat.

“Anyway, forget I said anything.”

“I already have.”

He smiled.

The door opened again.

A Dartwood warrior stepped inside and bowed.

“Lady Flourish, Alpha Damian wants these documents reviewed before noon.”

I reached for them.

“Leave them here.”

The warrior placed the folder down and left.

Rhys glanced at me.

“Your husband is keeping you busy.”

“He is.”

I opened the folder.

The first page contained financial records connected to F-Tech. The second contained payment transfers.

The third made my stomach tighten. There were several transactions from an account I recognized.

Stonehedge’s internal war chest.

I stared at the figures.

“Rhys.”

He came closer.

“What is it?”

I pointed to the page.
