The darkness lasted only a few seconds before the emergency lights kicked back on, but by then Marvolo was no longer standing beside the table.
My wolf pushed forward at once, and Damian caught my arm before I could move toward the door.
“Where did he go?”
“I don’t know.”
His eyes had darkened, Alpha scent spreading through the room as he scanned it. “Magnus.” His voice came through my phone almost instantly.
“Alpha?”
“Lock down the building.”
Movement stirred outside as the security team assigned to me reacted. The lawyers at the table stared at us in confusion, Eugene standing tight faced beside me.
“Flourish, what is happening?”
Before I could answer, Damian lifted a hand toward the waiter. “Could we get clean serving utensils?”
Everyone stared at him. The waiter blinked. “Yes, sir.”
Marvolo’s chair sat empty. Damian looked at the fish on my plate. “For hygiene.”
Eugene frowned. Lewis glanced between us. “Did something happen to the fish?”
“No.” Damian’s attention shifted to me. “Eat.”
“You are unbelievable.”
The tension in his face eased slightly, though his wolf stayed alert. “You haven’t eaten.”
The door opened again. Marvolo walked back in, and my body stiffened. He looked completely calm, but my wolf reacted at once to the scent that followed him inside.
Damian moved slightly closer to me. Marvolo noticed. “Did I miss something?”

“You left.”
“The lights went out.”
“And?”
“I checked the corridor,” Marvolo said, smiling faintly.
Damian laughed once, short. “You’re very concerned for someone who just met her.”
“I was checking whether your security had frightened her.”

Damian’s jaw tightened. The waiter returned with fresh utensils, and Marvolo calmly placed a slice of beef on my plate. “Try this. It’s good.” My wolf stayed restless. “You barely touched your food.”
Damian leaned back. “Mr. Fischer, I didn’t expect you to be so attentive.”
“Is that a problem?”
“Not yet.”
Eugene rubbed his forehead, the tension between the two men impossible to ignore now.
Damian lifted his glass. “How old are your children?”
Marvolo’s expression shifted. “I don’t have children.”
“Elementary school?”
“Excuse me?”
“Middle school, then.”
I closed my eyes. He was doing this on purpose.
“I’m not married,” Marvolo said, jaw tight.
“Oh.” Damian looked almost disappointed. “No girlfriend either?”
“No.”
“Interesting.”
Marvolo stared at him while Damian kept eating. “I assumed you were older.”
The silence that followed was almost painful. Marvolo finally laughed, short and humorless.

“You came here looking for a fight.”
“No.”
My wolf growled quietly. “Damian.”

He ignored me. Marvolo’s gaze dropped to Damian’s left hand, where his ring caught the light. “Then I assume you’re married.”
“Mr. Fischer-” Eugene started.
“Yes.” Damian lifted his hand, the ring clearly visible. “I am.” His eyes moved to me, and my heart dropped. “What about Flourish?”
I stared at him. The whole table went quiet.
“Are you married?”
I knew exactly what he was doing. My phone still sat beside my plate with that warning about Marvolo on the screen, and Damian had chosen this exact moment to put me on the spot.
I forced a smile. “Yes.”
Eugene looked at me, and I quickly added, “I mean, yes, I’m married.”
Damian’s wolf reacted so sharply I felt satisfaction move through the bond. His eyes stayed on
Marvolo raised his brows. “Really?”
“Yes.” My face burned.
Damian leaned back. “When did that happen?”
“Recently.”
Eugene nearly choked on his drink, the other lawyers exchanging confused looks.
Before anyone could ask more, my phone began vibrating. Damian looked toward it at once. The name on the screen tightened my stomach,
Eugene.
He was sitting right across from me, phone in hand. It wasn’t him calling. A second number. Unknown.
Damian saw it too, his expression hardening. I answered.

No one spoke. Only breathing for several seconds. Then a woman’s voice whispered through the phone.
“Flourish.”
My entire body froze. “Mom?”
