Chapter 238 Hidden Marks

Alpha Damian’s POV

The lights went out, and for several seconds the only thing I could hear was breathing.

Then the growl came again, deeper this time, low enough to tremble the glasses on the table, and every wolf in the room reacted at once.

I moved in front of Flourish. “Nobody move.”

Magnus was already pulling his phone free, but the screen wouldn’t come on. The emergency system had failed.

I felt her wolf press against her skin. “That isn’t one of them.”

“No,” I said quietly, my own wolf rising beneath the calm I was fighting to hold.

A heavy sound came from the corridor outside. Something moved past the broken doorway, and the floor shook once.

Eugene grabbed the edge of the table. “Flourish?”

“Stay behind me,” she told him.

“I don’t think that’s going to help.”

Despite everything, the fear in his voice almost pulled a laugh out of me. Then something struck the wall outside, and the whole room shook again. Lewis cursed.

Several lawyers pushed further into the room while Magnus and his warriors formed a line near the doorway.

I found Flourish’s hand behind my back. “Stay with me.”

Her fingers closed around mine, her wolf terrified, but I let the bond carry back whatever control I still had.

The lights came back on. The corridor stood empty. Nothing moved, nothing appeared, only broken wood scattered across the floor.

Magnus stepped into the corridor. “Nothing.”

“Nothing doesn’t make that sound,” I said.

He looked down. “There are marks.”

Flourish followed me toward the doorway before I could stop her. The floor outside had been torn open,

four deep grooves carved through the tiles, too wide to belong to any wolf.

My wolf pushed forward. “Flourish.”

“I see them.”

“Then go back inside.”

“Don’t start.”

“This is not the time.”

“It’s never the time according to you.”

Magnus glanced between us. “Should I come back later?”

I ignored him, and despite everything, her wolf seemed to ease slightly. Almost.

Rhys’s voice came through my phone. “Alpha?”

“Talk.”

“The creature?”

“Not here.”

Silence, then, “It wasn’t at Stonehedge either.”

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

“The body was attacked, but whatever killed the commander didn’t

“Could it have followed them?” Magnus asked.

I looked down the dark end of the corridor. “Possibly.”

“Alpha, the tunnels are becoming unstable.”

I felt my own body tense. “Why?”

there.”

“We don’t know yet.” The line crackled, and Rhys lowered his voice. “But there is movement beneath the eastern grounds again.”

Flourish’s heart jumped, I could hear it. “Elara?”

“No visual.”

I hated those words as much as she did. No visual. No location. No proof.

I ended the call. “We’re leaving.”

“What?”

“The lawyers leave with security. Magnus takes Marvolo.”

Marvolo’s face hardened. “I’m not your prisoner.”

“You smelled like Stonehedge.”

“And I told you why.”

“You also knew about Elara.”

He said nothing, and my eyes narrowed. “Until I know what you’re involved in, you’re coming with us.”

Flourish’s wolf stirred uneasily beside me. Marvolo looked at her. “Flourish.”

She stepped closer to me instead. “Don’t.”

“I didn’t hurt your mother,” he said.

“Then help us find her.”

“I am trying.”

I let my Alpha scent thicken. “Not with her.”

He looked like he wanted to argue, then nodded once. “Fine.”

Eugene had watched the whole exchange quietly, hardly speaking since the attack.

When the warriors started moving everyone out, he caught Flourish’s arm.

“Flourish.”

She turned. His face was pale. “What is going on?”

She looked at me, and Eugene followed her gaze, then looked back at her. “Who is he?” he asked, lowering his voice. “And don’t tell me he’s just security.”

I stayed close enough to hear every word.

“It’s complicated,” she said.

“That’s what you said earlier.”

“I know.”

He exhaled, tired. “When did you get married? Who did you marry?” His eyes moved to me again. “Did you do this because of everything that happened before?”

“No.”

“Does your family know?”

Her silence made his expression tighten. “Flourish, marriage isn’t something you do because you’re upset or trying to escape another situation.”

I watched something in her soften. “I didn’t do it impulsively.”

“Then tell me who he is.”

I stepped closer. Eugene looked straight at me, and for several seconds neither of us said anything.

Then she sighed. “Damian.”

He blinked. “What?”

“He’s Damian.”

I kept my expression unreadable. Eugene looked at her again. “You married him?”

Her cheeks warmed. “Yes.”

Magnus suddenly became very interested in the damaged wall.

Eugene rubbed his forehead. “And you were going to tell me when?”

“I was trying to figure things out.”

“Are you still figuring things out?”

She didn’t answer that.

“Does he treat you well?” Eugene asked.

I looked at her, my wolf stirring beneath the question. It felt harder to answer than it should

“He does,” she said.

I let my hand brush against hers.

Eugene studied her carefully. “If you’re saying that because he’s standing beside you—”

“I’m not.”

Something in me finally eased. Eugene nodded slowly. “Fine.” He pointed at me. “I’m meeting him properly soon.”

I raised a brow, and he walked off before either of us could answer.
