Marvolo’s answer remained in the clinic room after he said it. Harold watched him closely, while Magnus moved nearer to the bed and asked him to explain exactly what my father had wanted.

Marvolo swallowed before speaking. “He hired me to investigate the tunnels beneath Stonehedge, but he didn’t tell me what I would find.”

“What did he tell you?” Magnus asked.

“That someone had been using the old passages without the council’s knowledge. He wanted to know who had access and whether the security system could be bypassed.”

Harold folded his arms. “And you accepted the job without asking why he couldn’t use his own people?”

“I asked. He said he didn’t want the council alerted before he had proof.”

That sounded like my father, but it did not prove he had kidnapped my mother or ordered the creature to guard her. I had spent years believing Elara was dead, and now every answer seemed to lead back to someone I knew.

“Did Garret know Elara was down there?” I asked.

Marvolo shook his head. “I can’t say for certain. He knew the tunnels were active, but I never told him I found her.”

“Why not?”

“Because I was attacked before I could get out. After that, I didn’t know who was watching me.”

Harold’s eyes narrowed. “You expect us to believe you kept this secret for days, while someone held Elara beneath our territory?”

“I expect you to understand that I was injured, hunted, and unsure which Stonehedge official was involved.”

Magnus raised a hand before Harold could continue. “We need evidence before we accuse anyone. If Garret is involved, we must establish what he did and who helped him.”

I wanted to defend my father, but the words would not come. His name had appeared in too

many places already, and I couldn’t dismiss Marvolo’s account simply because I didn’t want it

to be true.

Rhys stepped away to check the tunnel records. He had connected his phone to the clinic’s secure terminal and was comparing the access logs with the credentials found on the concealed control panel.

“Some records are missing,” he said after a few minutes. “But the panel was accessed using an authorized Stonehedge account.”

“Can you trace it to Garret?” Harold asked.

“Not yet. The credentials may belong to the account holder, or someone may have used them without permission.”

Before anyone could ask another question, my phone rang. Cheryl’s name appeared on the screen, and I answered immediately.

“Flourish, where are you?” she asked.

“Stonehedge clinic. What happened?”

“Several senior staff members received instructions to suspend their projects until you return to the office. They’re saying the directive came from someone with authority over company operations.”

“Who sent it?”

“I’m checking. Two department heads have already paused work, and Finance wants confirmation before releasing the next batch of payments.”

I stood and moved toward the door so I could hear her clearly. “Don’t let anyone cancel a contract or release funds without your approval. Send me the directive and the names of everyone who received it.”

“I will. There’s something else, too,”

“What?”

“A major shareholder has requested an urgent review of company governance and financial authority. They want the meeting held as soon as possible.”

I glanced back at Harold. He had heard enough to know the call concerned my company.

“When did the request arrive?” I asked Cheryl.

“About twenty minutes ago. They say it’s necessary because you’re currently unavailable.”

The timing was too convenient. Someone had tried to interfere with the company while I was trapped in Stonehedge, dealing with my mother’s disappearance and a creature that had nearly killed several warriors.

“Send me the request and the supporting documents,” I said. “I’ll review them before we agree to anything.”

“I can arrange a secure meeting with the department heads.”

“Do that. Keep it limited to the people who need to be there, and verify everyone before letting them join.”

I ended the call and turned to Harold.

“I need to review F-Tech records.”

“You’re not leaving Stonehedge.”

“I didn’t say I was leaving. Cheryl can arrange a secure remote meeting.”

Harold shook his head. “We’re dealing with an active threat. You should focus on staying safe.”

“My company is already being affected. If someone is using my absence to interfere with its operations, I need to know.”

“And if the request is connected to the attack?”

“Then it belongs in this investigation, too.”

He looked ready to argue, but Magnus spoke first.

“She can attend remotely from a secure room. Rhys can monitor the connection and verify the participants.”

Harold’s gaze shifted to Rhys.

“I’ll use the clinic’s protected network,” Rhys said. “No external access unless I approve it.”

Harold finally nodded. “One meeting. You stay here, and Rhys stays with you.”

“I can agree to that.”

We moved to a private room near the clinic’s security station. Rhys checked the connection, then Cheryl joined with the department heads and the company’s legal adviser.

I asked them to confirm their names and positions before we began. Once everyone had been

The document called for an urgent review of governance procedures, including who could authorize payments, suspend projects, and access financial records. It also requested temporary changes to the company’s approval structure until I returned to the office.

“Who submitted this?” I asked.

“The request came through a legitimate shareholder channel,” Cheryl replied. “The signature and account details appear valid.”

“Then why are we only receiving it now?”
