Eugene’s phone vibrated again, but he left it facedown on the table. The guests had stopped talking, waiting for him to explain why he had gone quiet.

“What did the first message say?” I asked.

He picked up the phone and turned it toward me. “One of the invited guests cancelled. Said there was an urgent family matter.”

“Which guest?”

Eugene pointed to the name. I recognized it from the list he had sent me earlier, though I hadn’t spoken to the person before tonight.

Rhys came over from the doorway when Eugene called him. He checked the guest’s details and made a quick call, then stepped away to speak with someone from his team. A few minutes later, he returned.

“The phone went offline shortly after the guest left their office,” he said. “We’re checking the last known location.”

“Did they confirm the cancellation themselves?” I asked.

“Eugene received the message from their number. We can’t confirm who sent it.”

I looked at the empty chair at the far end of the table.

The guest had been expected to join us for the discussion, and now we had no way to reach them. I asked Eugene to keep the meeting going while Rhys followed up.

The conversation resumed, though I found it harder to focus.

The records from the shell company were still spread across the table, and the name connected to Harold’s family remained in my thoughts. The visitor’s warning about being found had also stayed with me.

We had no proof that the missing guest was involved, but the timing was difficult to ignore.

One of the lawyers opened a folder and explained how the payments had been routed.

“The company used several business accounts,” he said. “Funds were moved between them before reaching the final recipient. That makes it harder to establish who ultimately received the money.”

“Can you trace the transfers?” I asked.

“We can follow some of them. Others require records from the banks and businesses involved. We’ll need to make formal requests.”

I turned to the pages in front of me. “Have any of those accounts been connected to F-Tech?”

The lawyer checked his notes before answering.

“Our initial review found one past contract between F-Tech and the shell company. We haven’t found evidence that F-Tech knowingly funded the tunnel operation.”

I kept my eyes on him. “What was the contract for?”

“We’re still reviewing the supporting documents. The transaction itself appears in F-Tech’s records, but we need to confirm the full scope and whether the company used another party to fulfill any part of it.”

That was enough to make me want the file secured immediately. Even if the contract had been legitimate, someone could use it to create a false link between F-Tech and the underground operation.

I called Cheryl.

“I need you to preserve the contract with the shell company,” I said when she answered. “All related correspondence, invoices, and records. Don’t delete or alter anything while the audit is ongoing.”

“I’ll notify the audit team and lock the relevant files.”

“Keep the access list limited. I want to know who has viewed or copied the records.”

“Understood. Do you want me to send you the contract?”

“Not through the usual system. I’ll review it when I’m back at the office.”

I ended the call and told Eugene what I had asked Cheryl to do.

He made a note for the legal team to include the contract in their review, making sure they distinguished the documented transaction from any claims about how the money had been

used.

My phone rang again. Harold,

I answered. “What happened?”

“The council found another breach in the underground security system,” he said. His voice was clipped, and I could hear people speaking behind him. “They’re checking which sections were affected.”

“Do they know how it happened?”

“Not yet. The access logs don’t line up with the ward records.”

My wolf reacted to the mention of the breach. I pressed my fingers against the table and listened.

“Is it near the eastern wing?” I asked.

“They’re checking that too. I need you here.”

“I’m still at the dinner. I’ll return as soon as it ends.”

“Flourish, this is connected to everything we’ve been dealing with.”

“I know. That’s why I’m not leaving before I make sure the legal team has what it needs.”

He fell silent for a moment. “Keep Rhys with you.”

“He’s here.”

“Good. Call me when you’re on your way.”

The call ended. I put my phone down and looked at Rhys.

“We’re leaving as soon as we finish,” I told him.

He nodded and spoke quietly into his earpiece. One of the guards outside the room shifted closer to the door.

I could sense his wolf alerting to the change in our plans.

Eugene was asking the lawyers to send him a list of records they still needed when a server approached our table.

He carried a small envelope and stopped beside me.

“Excuse me, ma’am. Someone asked me to give this to you.”

“Who?”

“He didn’t leave a name.”
