“They found the missing guest in the eastern wing,” he said. “There’s another person with them. They haven’t confirmed the identity yet.”
Harold turned to the guard beside him. “Tell the team to hold their positions. Nobody approaches until we get there.”
The guard nodded and spoke into his radio. Another message came through almost immediately.
Magnus had ordered the council to remain inside the secured chamber until the eastern wing was cleared.
The estate was already on heightened security, and several guards had shifted into wolf form to patrol the outer corridors.
“I’m going with you,” I told Harold.
He looked at me. “You should stay here.”
“The photograph was given to me. The shell company records are connected to F-Tech, and the investigation has already reached the tunnels beneath this estate. I’m not staying behind while you find out who’s inside that room.”
“This could be dangerous.”
“I know.”
Rhys stepped in before Harold could argue again. “She’s coming with us. I’ll stay beside her.”
Harold gave him a brief look, then nodded. “Fine. But you follow my instructions.”
We moved through the eastern corridor with six guards surrounding us. The usual estate staff had been cleared from the area, leaving only security personnel behind.
Handheld scanners were being used at every doorway, while two trained pack wolves moved ahead, stopping whenever they caught an unfamiliar scent.
The smell of stone, old wood, and wolf filled the corridor. My own wolf remained alert, reacting to every new scent as we passed.

“Anything?” Harold asked one of the guards.
“Nothing in the first three rooms.”
Another guard checked the scanner. “No movement in the passage ahead.”
We continued until we reached the records room. The door was reinforced steel, with an old access panel beside it.
Rhys crouched beside the panel.
“This was used again,” he said.
Harold frowned. “By who?”
“I can’t tell yet. The system shows an access attempt, but the identity code was rejected.”
“Then how did someone get inside?”
“That’s what I’m trying to determine.”
Harold stepped toward the door and entered the security override. The panel flashed once.
Nothing happened.
He tried again. Still nothing.
“Open it manually,” he ordered.
The guards moved forward, but Rhys stopped them.
“Wait.”
He pointed toward the frame.

I saw the markings then. They were old carvings cut into the stone surrounding the door, almost hidden beneath years of dust and paint.
I had seen similar symbols before, though never this close.
My wolf reacted immediately.
“Flourish,” Harold said.
I stepped closer.
The moment I reached the frame, the markings began to glow.

I looked down at my hand. The glow spread from the stone beneath my fingers, moving along the carved lines until the entire frame carried a faint light.
Harold stared at it.
“What is happening?”
“I don’t know.”
My wolf spoke softly inside my mind.
“Blood.”
pulled my hand away, but the markings remained lit.
Rhys looked between the door and me. “Try the handle.”
I hesitated before reaching for it.
The lock clicked.
A deep mechanical sound followed, and the door slowly opened.
The guards raised their weapons.
Harold stepped in first, and Rhys stayed close behind me. I followed them into the records
room.
The air inside was cold. Server racks lined one wall, their lights blinking across the dark room.
Papers and equipment had been moved from several shelves, and a chair had been pushed against the far side of the room.
The missing guest sat on the floor beside it.
Their hands were tied behind their back.
“Don’t move,” one of the guards ordered.
The guest looked up at us. Their face was pale, and there was a cut along one side of their forehead. I recognized them immediately from the dinner.
Harold moved closer.

“Are you hurt?”
The guest shook their head.
“Who tied you up?”
Before they could answer, Rhys lifted his hand.
“There’s someone else.”
I followed his gaze.

A figure stood beside the server rack with their back toward us. They had been so still that I hadn’t noticed them when we entered. Their clothes were dark, and their head was slightly lowered.
Harold raised his weapon.
“Turn around.”
The figure did not move.
Harold repeated himself, louder this time.
