Chapter 273 The Trap

I left the vault with the old letter secured inside my bag and Elara beside me. I had no intention of following the message alone, no matter what it said.

Rhys was already waiting upstairs when we reached the main corridor. He took one look at my face and straightened.

“We’re going to F-Tech,” I said.

His expression tightened. “I assumed you’d say that.”

“You also assumed I’d go alone?”

“No. I assumed I’d have to stop you from doing it.”

Elara stayed behind while Rhys contacted the security team. I sent Cheryl one message telling her to remain available and not discuss the breach with anyone.

Within minutes, two pack guards joined us, both wearing the reinforced vests our security division had started using after the earlier attacks.

The drive to F-Tech was quiet. I kept checking my phone, but the unknown number did not send another message.

I tried calling the number once. It rang twice before the call ended. I tried again and got nothing. Rhys noticed me lowering the phone.

“Don’t keep calling it.”

“I wanted to know if it was still active.”

“It probably is. That doesn’t mean the person behind it will answer.”

My wolf remained awake the entire time.

“Trap,” she warned.

“I know.”

Ignoring it would leave questions unanswered. Someone had reached into F-Tech, and I needed to know how deep they had gone.

The F-Tech building looked completely normal when we arrived. Employees were still coming

through the front entrance, the reception lights were on, and the usual security screens showed access activity across the building.

Coffee and carpet cleaner filled the lobby.

Then the wolves at the entrance reacted.

Both guards stationed beside the reception desk lifted their heads at the same time. One moved closer to the other, nostrils widening as he scanned the lobby.

“What is it?” Rhys asked.

The older guard looked toward the elevator.

“There’s a scent.”

“Whose?”

He shook his head. “I don’t know.”

I stepped forward and caught it too. It was faint beneath the coffee, cleaning chemicals, and the scent of dozens of employees, but it did not belong in the building.

My wolf pushed forward.

“Someone was here.”

Rhys immediately touched his earpiece.

“Lock down the internal floors. Keep the main entrance open for evacuation, but nobody moves between floors without clearance.”

Cheryl came rushing from the administrative wing.

“What happened?”

“You’re going to the secure office,” I told her.

She frowned. “Why?”

“Because someone has accessed restricted F-Tech information.”

That was enough to wipe the question from her face.

Rhys led her toward the back office while I stayed near the reception area. The guards checked the nearest corridors, but nothing looked out of place.

Then Rhys called my name.

“Flourish.”

I walked over.

He had pulled up the network access logs on a tablet.

“There are gaps.”

“How many?”

“Enough to make me uncomfortable.”

“Can you trace them?”

“I’m trying.”

He turned the screen toward me. Several restricted files had been accessed without triggering the usual alerts. The timestamps were scattered across the previous hour.

I recognized two of the folders immediately. They contained internal research reports, employee security records, and access keys for systems that were never supposed to be connected to the public network.

“Can they copy everything?”

“Not if I cut them off first.”

“Do it.”

Rhys started typing. The screen changed several times as he moved through the system, checking access routes and shutting down connections one by one.

“Someone is still inside,” he said.

“Can you see them?”

“No. They hid the source.”

He turned the screen toward me again.

“Someone already got inside the system,” he said. “The message was probably meant to make us come here.”

I nodded.

I needed to know before they acted again.

“And now they know we’re here.”

The elevator chimed.

I turned toward it.

The doors opened.

Nobody stepped out.

Rhys grabbed my arm.

“Wait.”

Too late.

A man came through the side of the elevator doorway and drove his shoulder into one of the guards. The guard hit the wall, and the second attacker moved straight toward me.

I blocked his first strike and caught his wrist.

He was strong, but not strong enough.

My wolf surged forward as I twisted his arm and drove him against the elevator wall. His scent hit me properly then, mixed with the strange trace we had noticed downstairs.

He was Eastern, but there was something else beneath it that I couldn’t place.

He tried to shift his hand into claws, but I slammed his wrist down before he could finish.

“Who sent you?”

He said nothing.

He struck again.

I ducked, drove my elbow into his ribs, and forced him back. Rhys reached us, but the attacker suddenly stopped fighting and shoved past me toward the control panel.

I realized what he was doing a second too late.

He wasn’t trying to kill me.

He wanted access.

His fingers reached the panel, and the restricted system interface appeared beneath the normal elevator controls. A small device had been hidden behind the panel.

I tore it free.

The man cursed and lunged for it.

Rhys tackled him.

“Get him down!”

The two guards pinned him before he could shift fully. He fought hard for several seconds, then went still when Rhys pressed a restraint around his wrist.

I looked at the device in my hand.

It was connected to the elevator’s internal network.

“He used my presence as cover,” I said.

Rhys looked at the screen. “He needed your access signature.”

My stomach dropped.

The elevator doors began closing.
