The photograph Rhys sent me stayed open on my phone as we drove toward Moonbridge.
Voss stood in the picture beside the infiltrator from F-Tech, both of them much younger.
The date on the image made one thing clear. Whatever was waiting for us at Moonbridge had been planned long before tonight.
Rhys drove while I sat in the passenger seat, with four Stonehedge warriors following in the vehicle behind us.
“You can still change your mind,” he said.
“I know.”
“You’re not going to.”
“No.”
He sighed and kept his eyes on the road.
I checked the map again. Moonbridge sat beyond the old eastern boundary, in territory that had not appeared on any current pack map.
The road became narrower as we went, and the phone signal disappeared completely about twenty minutes before we reached the entrance.
My wolf lifted her head.
“Old wards.”
“I feel them.”
The first sign of Moonbridge appeared between the trees.
Two broken stone pillars stood on either side of the road, covered in markings I couldn’t read.
The moment our vehicle passed between them, the air changed.
The wards recognized us.
I felt pressure move across my skin, then disappear.

Rhys noticed it too.
“Everyone out.”
We left the vehicles and continued on foot.

The Stonehedge warriors shifted partially, allowing claws and fangs to come through while keeping enough human control to move through the narrow path.
Their wolves kept sniffing the air, checking the trees, the ground, and the old stone walls surrounding the territory.
Nobody spoke much.
There were too many unfamiliar scents. Some were old, buried beneath damp soil and moss. Others were fresh.
“Someone has been here recently,” one of the warriors said.
Rhys raised a hand.
We stopped.
I listened.
Nothing.
Then my wolf growled.
“Many.”
I looked at Rhys.
“How many?”
He closed his eyes for a moment, letting his wolf track what mine had already sensed.
“More than twenty.”
“Where?”
“Below us.”
We found the entrance beneath a collapsed stone structure. A rusted metal gate covered the opening, but it had already been unlocked.
Rhys touched the frame.

“Someone opened it recently.”
We went inside.
The tunnel was narrow enough that we had to move in pairs. Old ward lines covered the walls, some still active and others broken. Every few minutes, one of the warriors would stop to check a scent before motioning us forward.
The deeper we went, the colder it became.
No lights had been installed, so we relied on small lamps attached to our weapons. The beams moved across old markings, sealed doors, and faded pack symbols.
I recognized the First Alpha symbol on one wall.
I stopped.
Rhys turned.
“What?”
I touched the marking.
“It’s the same symbol from the vault.”
His eyes moved over the wall.
“So they knew.”
“Before Stonehedge was built.”
We continued.
The tunnel eventually opened into a large chamber.
I stepped through first.
Then I stopped.
Wolves filled the chamber.
Dozens of them stood along the walls and across the open floor. Some wore dark clothing, others simple leather armor, but none carried modern pack insignia.
They looked nothing like the organized security teams I was used to seeing at Stonehedge.

Then I saw their eyes.
Silver.

Not the usual reflection that came from a wolf shifting under bright light. Their irises carried a faint silver color even in human form.
One of the warriors behind me whispered, “What are they?”
I didn’t answer.
At the far end of the chamber stood Voss.
He wasn’t alone.
Three wolves stood behind him, and more surrounded the room.
Voss looked at me and smiled.
“You came.”
Rhys stepped forward.
“You’re surrounded.”
Voss glanced at him.
“I know.”
I could hear my heartbeat.
“Why bring me here?”
“You wanted answers.”
“You could have given them to me at F-Tech.”
“That was never the place for them.”
One of the wolves near Voss moved forward.
My wolf immediately pushed against my skin.
“Shift.”
I didn’t hesitate.

My bones shifted, claws extending as fur covered my arms. The Stonehedge warriors shifted around me, preparing for the attack.
Rhys moved beside me.
“Wait.”
I looked at him.
The chamber had gone completely silent.
Voss raised one hand.
Nobody moved.
I expected the first attack.
Instead, the wolves began lowering themselves to the ground.
One by one.
The sound of knees hitting stone spread through the chamber.
The Stonehedge warriors froze.
I remained standing.
My wolf stared at them through my eyes.
“They know.”
I didn’t understand.
Another wolf lowered himself.
Then another.
Within seconds, every wolf in the chamber had bowed.
Even the three standing behind Voss.
I looked at Voss.
“What is this?”
He walked forward until he stood several feet away from me.

“This is what happens when they see the blood they’ve waited for.”
I glanced around the chamber.
“They don’t know me.”
“They don’t need to.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Voss smiled faintly.
“They have been taught what the First Alpha’s blood means since childhood.”
