Chapter 299 What Voss Is Willing To Do
Lady Flourish POV
I stayed beside the healer’s table while he worked on the wolf from Moonbridge. His injuries were worse than I had first understood.
The healer had closed the deepest wound and stopped the bleeding, but every movement still made the injured wolf tense.
His eyes opened when I pulled a chair closer.
“Can you talk?”
“For a little while.”
“Then tell me what happened.”
He swallowed. “Voss found us.”
“After Moonbridge?”
“Yes.”
He breathed through the pain before continuing. “He gathered everyone who knelt to you.”
My hands tightened around the chair.
“What did he want?”
“A public declaration.”
The wolf closed his eyes.
“He made us stand in front of the pack. One by one, he asked us to say we had been wrong. He wanted us to swear that we still belonged to him.”
“And the ones who refused?”
His breathing changed.
“They were killed.”
The room went quiet.
“How many?”
“Two.”
The answer came so softly that I almost missed it.
“What happened to the others?”
“He told us that was our last warning.”
“Did they have somewhere to hide?”
“Some did.”
“Did Voss find them?”
“I don’t know.”
“After the first executions, nobody trusted anyone. Some thought their families would be punished if they ran. Others believed Voss would forgive them if they stayed.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
“He kept asking questions. Names. Meetings. Who had spoken to you. Who had contact with Dartwood. Who had refused to report after Moonbridge.”
“How did you escape?”
“I attacked the guard when he opened the door.”
He winced as the healer adjusted the bandage on his side.
“I shifted and ran. They followed me for hours.”
“You came straight here?”
“I didn’t know where else to go.”
I looked down at him.
“You could have gone anywhere.”
“No.” His voice weakened. “You were the one we chose.”
I didn’t know what to say to that.
At Moonbridge, I had thought their decision belonged to them. I had never imagined I would sit beside an injured wolf and hear what that decision had cost him.
The healer changed the cloth beneath his shoulder. The wolf sucked in a breath and gripped the edge of the table until his claws showed.
My female wolf stirred.
“Why does this hurt?”
I had expected anger. I had expected fear. I had expected the need to protect the people who were still alive.
I had not expected grief.
I barely knew this wolf. I had seen him once at Moonbridge, among dozens of others.
I had never learned his name before tonight. Yet hearing that two of the wolves who had knelt to me were dead left me struggling to breathe normally.
My female wolf lowered her head inside me.
“They chose us.”
I closed my eyes.
“I didn’t ask them to.”
“I know.”
“They died because they did.”
The wolf did not answer.
Damian stood a few feet away, watching me. He had been quiet since we entered the medical room, but I could tell he was paying attention to every change in my face.
“You can’t carry their choice for them,” he said.
I looked at him.
“They’re dead.”
“I know.”
“They trusted me.”
“They trusted what you represented to them.”
