Chapter 298 The Eastern Gate

Alpha Damian

I was already moving before the alarm finished its second cycle.

“Eastern gate!” the security system repeated.

Warriors poured into the corridor from both sides, some already shifting as they ran. Claws struck the floor.

The pack link filled with overlapping reports, and I pushed through the noise, heading straight for the eastern entrance.

Flourish was behind me with two guards.

“Stay with her,” I ordered.

A warrior nodded and fell back whale Callum was beside me.

I had expected him to slow down once we left the house. He didn’t.

He kept pace without effort, moving with the balance of someone who had spent years training his body for more than appearances and business meetings.

I glanced at him once.

His jacket was still on. His breathing hadn’t changed.

“You fight?” I asked.

“When necessary.”

That was all he gave me.

We reached the outer grounds and found the eastern gate in pieces.

One section of the metal barrier had been forced inward, and the ward lines around it were broken. Several guards stood around the opening, weapons ready.

“Where is the intruder?” I asked.

One of them pointed.

“There.”

At first, I saw only blood.

Then the wolf moved.

He was dragging himself across the ground, one front leg hanging badly and his side covered in blood.

His fur was matted with dirt, and his breathing came in rough bursts. He wasn’t attacking.

He was trying to get inside.

“Hold position,” I ordered.

The warriors stopped advancing.

I walked closer, keeping my senses open. His scent reached me through the cold night air.

I knew it.

My male wolf reacted before I fully placed it.

“Moonbridge.”

I remembered the chamber. The wolves who had stood behind Voss. The ones who had stepped forward when Flourish spoke.

The ones who had lowered themselves and knelt before her despite knowing exactly what defying Voss could cost them.

This wolf had been one of them.

“Get a healer,” I said.

One warrior ran.

The injured wolf tried to lift his head.

“Alpha…”

“Don’t move.”

His eyes found mine.

“I had to get here.”

“You’re safe for now.”

He coughed and blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.

Callum stepped closer.

The wolf saw him and tried to push himself upright.

“Don’t.” I said.

His body dropped again.

“They know,” he whispered.

I crouched beside him.

“Who?”

“Voss.”

The name changed the air around us.

“What does he know?”

The wolf swallowed with difficulty,

“How many…”

His breathing broke.

“How many what?”

“How many of us knelt to Lady Flourish.”

My jaw tightened.

“Explain.”

“He found out.”

The wolf looked toward the broken gate as though he expected someone to come through it.

“He knows who turned against him at Moonbridge.”

My male wolf growled.

The injured wolf’s eyes closed for a second before opening again.

“He started hunting us.”

“Who?”

“Everyone who knelt.”

His voice was barely audible.

“One by one.”

The warriors around us went silent.

One of them looked toward the tree line, then checked the darkness behind the broken ward.
