Chapter 308 The Second Vessel

Alpha Damian POV

I kept staring at the recovered document long after Rhys stopped scrolling.

“The bloodline’s second vessel.”

The phrase bothered me. It sounded less like a title and more like a function.

“What does vessel mean?” I asked.

D

Rhys brought up the other files. “I’m not sure yet. The phrase shows up in four separate records.”

Callum stood across the table, reading over Rhys’s shoulder. “Don’t make assumptions.”

I looked at him. “You know something.”

“I know that old bloodline records use terms differently from modern pack records. Until we have the full context, I won’t speculate.”

Flourish stayed beside me and said nothing. Her wolf had been restless since we opened the file, and I could feel the strain of it through the bond.

Rhys opened the first document. The same phrase sat near the bottom. He opened a second, then a third, and this time there was more text.

“The primary heir carries authority over pack allegiance,” Rhys read. “The second vessel carries…” He stopped.

“What?” I asked.

“The text is damaged.” He enlarged the section. Only part of the sentence had survived. “…bloodline control.”

Nobody spoke.

Flourish turned to Callum. “What does that mean?”

He shook his head. “I don’t know.”

“You said there were records about another child.”

“I said I’d heard rumors. I never saw these documents.”

Rhys kept searching. Another record, from an older archive system, described two bloodline roles.

The primary heir was tied to authority, recognition, and the ability to strengthen allegiance between an Alpha and the wolves who followed him. The second vessel was described differently.

It was connected to the bloodline itself, not to leadership or territory. Control.

My wolf growled low.

“That explains why they keep asking for Flourish,” I said.

Callum glanced at me. “Maybe.”

“Think about it. If Flourish carries the authority side and this second child carries the control side, killing her may not be enough.”

Rhys nodded slowly. “If the records are accurate, whoever holds both could have access to something much bigger than political influence.”

Flourish folded her arms. “Voss wants me alive because he thinks I can lead packs.”

“That’s what we assumed.”

“And now?”

I looked at the photograph still on the screen. “Now I think we were wrong.”

The room felt smaller. For weeks, every move against Flourish had looked political. Voss wanted control, the Eastern Army wanted territory, and the attacks on loyal packs seemed meant to push everyone into submission.

But if there was another child carrying a different part of the First Alpha bloodline, the people hunting Flourish might want more than an heir.

They might want to control the bloodline itself. I didn’t like where that led.

Rhys opened another file. “This one predates the modern pack system.” He read slowly from the faded text. “The first vessel shall command loyalty where the bloodline is recognized. The second shall hold influence over the blood that carries it.”

Flourish frowned. “Influence over the blood?”

“Could that mean mind control?” I asked.

Callum shook his head. “Not necessarily. Bloodline magic has never been that simple.”

For once, he sounded as frustrated as the rest of us.

Rhys found one more reference. It described the second vessel as a safeguard, but several words had been removed from the original. “Someone edited these files.”

“Garret?” Flourish asked.

“Possibly. The changes were made through an old F-Tech archive account.”

I looked at her. She had gone quiet again. Before I could say anything, my phone rang. Ragnar.

“Damian.”

His voice was tight. “We have another breach.”

“Where?”

“Southern border. Two patrols found fresh tracks near the old service road. We lost the trail less than ten minutes ago.”

“I’m coming.”

Flourish caught my arm as I ended the call. “I’m coming too.”

“Stay here.”

Her face changed. “Damian.”

“This isn’t an argument. We have an active breach, and I need you protected while we work out what these records mean.”

She opened her mouth, but Callum spoke first. “He’s right.”

She shot him a look. “I hate it when you two agree.”

I almost smiled. “I’ll be back.”

She held my gaze, then let go. “Come back quickly.”

I left with Rhys and six Dartwood warriors. By the time we reached the southern border, Ragnar had already marked off the area, and the scent of several wolves hung near the tree line. I crouched beside the first track.

Three wolves, maybe four. They had moved fast and stayed close together.

“Any blood?” I asked.
