Chapter 317 She Was Not My Reflection
Lady Flourish
The howls from beyond the trees stopped almost as quickly as they had started.
I stayed beside Damian, watching the dark line of trees surrounding the settlement.
The wards along the walls were still glowing, but they no longer pressed against our bodies. Rhys had moved closer to Callum, while the three Dartwood warriors kept their eyes on the forest.
Amara stood a few steps away from us.
She looked completely different from the frightened woman I had expected to find. She was alert, her shoulders tense, her wolf close to the surface.
“Are they coming here?” I asked.
“They’re already close.”
Damian’s eyes shifted.
“How close?”
Amara looked at him. “Close enough that if you shift, they’ll know exactly where you are.”
His expression hardened.
I reached for his hand before he could say anything.
“Let’s not give them what they want.”
He looked at me for a moment, then his eyes returned to the trees.
Amara watched our hands.
“You really trust him.”
“I told you that.”
“I know. I’m trying to understand it.”
Her answer caught me off guard.
I turned fully toward her.
“You keep saying things about me as if you’ve known me for years.”
“I have.”
My brow furrowed.
“We’ve never met.”
“No. But I knew about you.”
She looked away briefly.
“I knew where you lived. I knew when you started showing signs of your wolf. I knew when you were old enough to shift properly.”
My stomach tightened.
“You were watching me?”
“Not me.”
“Who, then?”
“People who were protecting me.”
I glanced at Callum. He had gone quiet again.
Amara noticed.
“You don’t need to look at him every time you have a question.”
“I know.”
“You still do it.”
Callum sighed. “She’s not wrong.”
I ignored him.
“You said you weren’t my twin.”
Amara’s expression changed.
“I said I wasn’t.”
“Then what are you?”
“My sister.”
“That isn’t what I meant.”
“I know.”
She walked toward one of the old wooden benches near the wall and sat down. Her wolf remained close beneath her skin, watching every movement around her.
I stayed where I was.
“I need you to understand something before you start making assumptions,” she said. “We were not born together. We weren’t taken from the same place. We weren’t raised together. And I wasn’t created as some copy of you.”
The last part made me pause.
“I never thought you were created.”
“You were looking at me like you did.”
“I was shocked.”
“I know.”
Damian glanced between us.
Amara continued before I could respond.
“Our mother gave birth to me first. You were born later. By the time you came into the world, I was already gone.”
I stared at her.
“How much later?”
“A few years.”
That explained why she looked older.
“You remember our mother?”
“Yes.”
The answer came immediately.
“What was she like?”
Amara looked down at her hands.
“Kind. Careful. She was always afraid of saying too much when our father was around.”
My throat tightened.
That sounded like the woman I remembered.
“She loved you,” Amara said.
I looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“She told me.”
The words sat between us.
I had spent years wondering whether my mother had ever understood what happened to me, whether she had known what Garret had hidden. Now I was hearing about conversations I had never been part of.
“What did she tell you about me?”
Amara looked directly at me.
“That you were supposed to become the primary heir.”
My wolf stirred.
“Why?”
“Because your bloodline authority was stronger.”
I frowned.
“And yours?”
“Different.”
She stood again.
“My wolf carries the second vessel’s ability. Yours carries the authority that makes packs recognize the First Alpha line.”
I thought about the wolves who had lowered themselves before me. The packs that had started responding to the bloodline network. The strange way some wolves reacted whenever my aura surfaced.
“So my existence affects yours?”
“And mine affects yours.”
Damian’s jaw tightened.
“How?”
Amara looked at him.
“If our wolves become fully connected, the bloodline can respond in ways neither of us can control.”
“Meaning?”
“I don’t know.”
