1 Refuse To Be Your Lung
Chapter 73 You Begging Me
Lady Flourish’s POV
The waiting area outside the operating room felt colder with every passing minute.
เร
I sat motionless beneath the harsh white lights, my good hand clenched tightly against my lap while my wolf paced restlessly beneath my skin.
Every second that passed without news from the healers tightened the knot in my chest. By now, I could barely feel my limbs.
Grandma. Please be okay.
After several moments of staring at the glowing red light above the operating room doors, I finally unlocked my phone and dialed a number. The call connected after only two rings.
“Grandma collapsed. Come to Jake & Co.’s Hospital.” My voice was cold enough to freeze the air between us.
Immediately, Father’s displeasure crackled through the line. “Flourish, where are you? Do you even know the Luna Rite is tomorrow?” he snapped. “And who exactly was that man you ran away with? If I find out you dared to cheat on Harold, I’ll make sure I disown you.”
My wolf surged violently to the surface. A sneer curled across my lips. “Listen carefully, Father.”
My voice dropped lower. “Your mother is currently being resuscitated. She’s lying on an operating table fighting for her life, yet all you can think about is whether I mate with some irrelevant Alpha.” My fingers tightened around the phone. “Have you forgotten she’s your mother?”
Silence. For the first time since answering, Father didn’t have a response ready.
When he finally spoke again, his voice sounded noticeably less aggressive. “Isn’t she supposed to be at the nursing home?” A pause. “How the hell did she collapse?”
I closed my eyes briefly and inhaled through my nose. “I don’t know.” The anger burning through me threatened to spill over. “She’s still in surgery.” Opening my eyes again, I stared at the operating room doors. “When should I expect you?”
Father exhaled heavily. “I have a meeting with a CEO later tonight. I can’t cancel it.” For a moment, I thought I had misheard him. Then he continued. “I’ll have Lydia stop by the hospital. I’ll come once the meeting is finished.”
Something inside me went completely still. Grandma was fighting for her life.

And he was prioritizing a business meeting. My voice became even colder than before, the faint growl of my wolf bleeding into every syllable. “In that case, don’t bother coming.”
Before he could respond, I ended the call. The screen went dark. So did something inside me.
I lowered my phone and sat quietly outside the operating room, feeling as though I had been abandoned in the middle of a snowstorm.
Ever since my mother passed away, Grandma had been the only person who truly treated me like family.
The only one. I could endure insults, tolerate schemes, survive betrayal. But Grandma was the one line nobody was allowed to cross. Nobody.
After a long moment, I unlocked my phone again and dialed another number. This time, I didn’t hesitate.
Several hours later, Father finally arrived. By then, Grandma had already been transferred out of surgery.
I heard his voice before I saw him, because he was asking questions at the front desk, and one of the healers informed him that Lady Josephine had been moved to the Special Care Unit on the thirteenth floor.
A moment later, his footsteps approached. “Flourish.”
I lifted my gaze. Garett stood several feet away, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit.
At forty-seven years old, his Alpha bloodline and regular training regimen made him appear far younger than most men his age tall, handsome, carrying the kind of commanding presence that attracted attention wherever he went.
Unfortunately, I could still see traces of myself reflected in his eyes, and I hated that. Selene often bragged about resembling Father more than I did, as though that were some great accomplishment.
Personally, I couldn’t imagine anything worse. What was there to be proud of when the person you resembled was a monster?
Even from several feet away, I could smell the heavy scent of moonrose wine lingering around
him.
His mother had been in surgery. And he’d spent the evening drinking with CEOS.
Father frowned slightly as his gaze met mine, perhaps sensing the mockery in my eyes. Perhaps sensing the ice. “Flourish.” His brows knitted together. “What’s with that expression?”

Before I could answer, he continued. “Where’s your grandmother? Which room is she in? I want to see her.”
My wolf snarled. “She had a stroke, Garrett.” I didn’t bother calling him Father. “She’s in the SCU.”
His eyes widened. “A stroke?” The surprise on his face looked genuine. “It was that serious?” Then his expression darkened. “Didn’t I tell you to call Lydia?”
I stared at him. The urge to laugh was overwhelming. “Her relationship with Grandma isn’t exactly good.” My voice sharpened. “Grandma’s condition could worsen if Lydia is around.”
Father nearly choked. “Which room is she in?” he demanded. “Take me there now!”
I looked at him as though he had lost his mind. “Do you not know that visiting hours end at four in the afternoon?”
–
The silence that followed was almost amusing. It was already eight o’clock four hours past visiting hours.
Unable to argue, he changed the subject. “What did the healers say?” His gaze narrowed. “Will she wake up?” A brief pause. “Will she remember anything if she does?”
My bloodshot eyes locked onto his. For a second, I genuinely wondered whether he heard himself speak. “How could you ask something like that?” The fury in my chest flared again. “Do you want her to suffer? Is that what this is?”
Father coughed into his fist, then glared at me. “She’s my mother.” His voice hardened. “Why would I want her to suffer?” He shook his head. “Can you even hear yourself?”
For several moments, neither of us spoke. The pressure from our Alpha bloodlines collided invisibly between us, pushing and testing and refusing to yield.
Eventually, Father pinched the bridge of his nose. When he spoke again, his voice was calmer. More calculated. “Since visiting hours are over, you’ll attend the Luna Rite tomorrow.”
I blinked once, then tilted my head. Slowly, I lifted my injured arm. The cast was impossible to miss. “Do I look like I can shift into wolf form in this condition?” My lips curved into a humorless smile. “Let alone allow a male to mark me?”
Only then did his attention land on the cast. His eyes widened. “What happened to your arm?”
The next words out of his mouth made my blood run cold. “Don’t you know how important tomorrow is?”
I stared. Speechless.
