Chapter 84 Whatever Debt He Owes
Lady Flourish’s POV
00
The funeral hall remained wrapped in solemn silence as another visitor stepped inside.
Alpha Magnus.
He walked toward Grandma’s portrait with an unhurried pace, his usually commanding presence softened by grief. A deep sigh escaped him before he stopped in front of the memorial.
“So…” he murmured quietly. “Josephine has finally joined my late Luna.”
His weathered eyes lingered on Grandma’s smiling portrait.
“Two old friends reunited after so many years.”
Fine And
For a long moment, he simply stood there, lost in memories only he could see. Then he bowed his head respectfully, lit a white memorial candle, and placed it before the portrait.
The flickering flame reflected in his eyes before he turned to me.
“Flourish.” His voice was gentle. “Don’t be too hard on yourself.”
He looked at Grandma’s photograph again before letting out another quiet sigh. “In the end, we’re all going to the same place.”
His gaze settled on me with quiet kindness. “So try to let it go, all right?”
I gave him a slight nod, keeping my expression composed. “I understand.”
He rested a comforting hand on my shoulder for a brief moment before quietly stepping away.
Not long afterward, Damian arrived. The moment he entered the hall, his eyes found me.
His expression tightened almost imperceptibly.
It looked as though he wanted to come over and comfort me, but the room was crowded with mourners and family members. This wasn’t the right place.
Instead, he merely inclined his head toward Grandma’s portrait before offering his respects.
As I watched him, another figure caught my attention.
Selene.

She stood several steps behind Damian, her head lowered with practiced meekness. A faint crease formed between my brows.
What scheme is she plotting now?
Knowing her, she wouldn’t miss an opportunity like this.
Sure enough, after lingering for only a short while, she quietly slipped out of the funeral hall.
Without hesitation, I followed.
No sooner had I stepped into the corridor than I heard her sweet, carefully calculated voice.
“Oh, Damian…” I stopped around the corner. “I’m so sorry. I tripped and spilled coffee all over your jacket.”
Her voice was soft enough to melt hearts. “Please… let me clean it for you.”
As she spoke, she reached toward the front of his suit, her trembling fingers inching closer to the rigid lines concealed beneath the expensive fabric.
Her heartbeat was undoubtedly racing. She wasn’t trying to clean his jacket. She was trying to get close enough to touch him.
Damian’s eyes flashed with unmistakable disgust.
“It’s unnecessary.” His voice was colder than winter. “Besides…”
His
gaze settled on her without the slightest warmth. “We don’t know each other well enough for you to call me by my name.”
Selene’s smile stiffened. The words seemed to catch in her throat. Even so, she refused to let the opportunity slip away.
“Oh… Alpha…” She smiled awkwardly. “May I call you that?” “Please don’t be upset. I really didn’t mean to do it.”
As she spoke, she leaned closer again, deliberately allowing herself to teeter unsteadily toward
him.
Damian reacted instantly. He stepped sideways without the slightest hesitation.
Selene lost her balance completely.
Thud.

She landed squarely on the floor.
Damian glanced down at her, his brows knitting together.
“Sorry.” Although he apologized, irritation lingered plainly in his voice. “This is the first day since Lady Josephine passed away.”
His gaze hardened. “Perhaps a little respect is in order.”
Without waiting for a response, he turned and walked away. As he rounded the corner, his footsteps came to an abrupt halt.
Our eyes met.
My expression remained calm. His instincts, however, seemed to catch the storm hidden beneath that calmness.
For several silent seconds, neither of us spoke.
Finally, he asked quietly, “How are you holding up?”
I inclined my head slightly. “I’m all right.”
He looked at me for another moment before closing the distance between us. One hand gently lifted my chin until I had no choice but to meet his eyes.
“Liar.” His voice was low. “You’re not fine.”
Something inside my chest tightened.
The carefully constructed wall I’d built throughout the day threatened to crack. “Flourish…”
He paused. Then, with extraordinary gentleness, he drew me into his embrace. One hand rested lightly against my back while the other cradled the back of my head, as though I were something impossibly fragile.
Something precious.
The sternness that usually defined his features melted away, replaced by a warmth few people were ever fortunate enough to witness.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“Flourish…
When you’re with me…You don’t have to pretend to be strong.”
From somewhere farther down the corridor, I heard the unmistakable sound of someone grinding their teeth.

I didn’t need to look.
I already knew.
Selene.
I could almost feel the fury blazing in her eyes.
Ignoring it completely, I allowed myself to lean against Damian’s shoulder for one brief
moment.
Just one.
It was enough.
When I finally straightened again, the faint moisture lingering in my eyes had disappeared completely.
He studied me carefully. “Feeling any better?”
A small smile finally appeared on my lips. “A little. I’m fine now, Alpha Damian.”
The words had barely left my mouth before he looked at me thoughtfully. “Flourish. You and Harold aren’t betrothed anymore.”
