Chapter 147
I heard a mouse. Lucian’s expression froze, his grip on my jaw loosening. He remembered my terror of mice since I was eight, when Selene had locked me in the basement.
“Did Ayla release the mouse?”
I pushed his hand away.”I don’t want to wake Calista. Leave.”
He left my room. Images of Ayla crying, accusing me, flashed through his mind. His phone lit up – Ayla.
“Lucian, I’m scared. I can’t sleep. Can you come?” She feigned ignorance of his visit to my room. She wanted to know how he’d handle me
“Ayla, why did you put mice in Seren’s basement?”
She was stunned, about to deny it, then remembered the basement surveillance cameras.
They’d removed the interior cameras, but forgotten the basement.
“Lucian, I didn’t mean to. I thought it was someone Seren found, someone who hurt Willow.” She played the role of a distraught mother, using Willow as her shield.
Lucian loved Willow deeply; she knew this.
“I saw Willow’s injuries. And you wouldn’t call the Alpha’s warriors, just locking her in the basement. I was overwhelmed, so I released some
mice to vent.”
“Lucian, I did it all because I love Willow so much.” Willow was her trump card.
Seeing his silence, she softened her tone.
‘Lucian, I can’t sleep. I keep seeing snakes. Come to the Pack’s infirmary.”
“It’s late. Go to bed.” He hung up abruptly. Her mention of snakes brought back my fear of mice. He wondered if I was also sleepless tonight.
After Lucian left, I locked my door. But he was the head of the Silvermane family. He could easily enter.
A servant gave him the key.
I’d taken medicine and could sleep for hours. Lucian awoke and lay beside me, drowsy from the medicine, falling asleep.
But I couldn’t.
I was trapped in a nightmare, the fear of mice magnified, intensified.
Lucian heard my tearful murmurs, “Don’t come… go away…”
My hands waved frantically.”Lucian… Lucian… Lucian… Let me go… please…”
His heart ached. He sat by the bed, gently wiping away my tears.
The hot tears felt like burns.
He took off his coat, got in bed, pulling me into his embrace.
His hand gently patted my back, soothing me.
In his arms, I calmed down, and slept soundly.
The next day, the maid knocked, summoning me to breakfast.
Since Aurora’s death, my sleep had been troubled. I awoke to find it was almost eight. My alarm hadn’t gone off. I hurried to the dining room. My favorite breakfast awaited me.
“Grandma.”
