Chapter 8
I don’t know how much time passed before I woke from a nightmare.
In the dream, I was drowning in a sea of criticism.
“Rank-climber! Shameless Omega! You pathetic stray!”
They hurled insults at me without mercy, judging me for things they didn’t understand.
Then, Alpha Julian appeared before me, holding Serena’s hand.
I wasn’t met with a public announcement of our bond, nor was I met with his protection or defense.
Instead, Julian looked at Serena with tender eyes. He kissed the top of her head and handed me an invitation to the Luna Naming Ceremony, his gaze filled with nothing but disgust.
“Chloe, Serena is the Luna I want. We’re making it official. Stop harassing me.”
“I’ve been lying to you all these years. I never planned on taking you as my Luna. You’re a weak Omega with no pack to back you. You really aren’t good enough for me.”
I instinctively reached out, trying to grab hold of something-anything.
But the world before me shattered into pieces, and the ground beneath me collapsed.
I fell into the abyss.
“No! No!”
My eyes snapped open, my fingers reflexively clutching the sheets.
Suddenly, a cold, handsome face appeared in my field of vision.
My tensed nerves slowly began to relax.
“Arthur?”
I whispered his name.
The man offered a gentle smile. A flicker of joy at our reunion flashed in his dark eyes, but it was quickly replaced by raw heartache.
“Back then, I was taken in by the Sterling family and left you all alone. It’s been over twenty years since we said goodbye. All these years, you’ve been…”
His long fingers gently gripped my hand. His gaze drifted to my swollen eyes and the bruises on the corners of my mouth.
It was obvious I hadn’t been doing well.
To come out of the Pack Dungeon in such a pathetic state spoke volumes.
‘I know you were detained for theft, but why were you beaten like this?”
At his question, the faces of those she-wolves who had attacked me flashed through my mind.
“The elders gave them orders to ‘look after’ me.”
The memory was like a thorn driven deep into my heart, causing an agonizing throb.
Julian had been so ruthless just because I had picked up his Mating Pact with Serena.
Our past love was truly a joke.
But at least I saw the truth now. Since my mark had been burned away and Julian and I had no legal registry, I was free. I could leave whenever I wanted, couldn’t I?
I would never entangle myself with Julian Vance again.
I looked at Arthur Sterling, grabbing his hand like it was my last lifeline.
“I just offended someone I shouldn’t have. It’s over now.”

Arthur nodded, lowering his eyes.
“So, what do you want to do next?”
I denched my fists. The love in my heart had vanished, replaced by a cold, burning resentment.
“I want my innocence back. I want to be repaid for every injustice I’ve suffered in that pack.”
Artic, can you help me? I’ll do whatever it takes to repay you for the rest of my life.”
Arthur looked into my determined eyes, feeling à suffocating sense of pity.

I had always been soft-hearted. Back at St. Jude’s Orphanage in the neutral zone, even when I was bullied by the other stray pups, I would usually repay cruelty with kindness.
