Grant Fletcher strode down the hall.
He wore an impeccably tailored dark gray suit, his hair meticulously styled, his expression entirely unreadable.
An assistant trailed closely behind, carrying a leather briefcase.
The nurses in the corridor instinctively stood a little straighter as he passed.
"Dad," Finn stepped forward to greet him.
Grant's face remained rigid.
"How is your mother?"
"She's stable. She woke up a little while ago."
Grant didn't ask a second question, turning sharply toward the hospital room.
Finn followed right behind him.
As Grant pushed the door open, his steps faltered for a fraction of a second.
Yolanda was propped up in bed, holding a compact mirror in one hand while expertly touching up her lipstick with the other.
Her complexion still carried a sickly pallor, her eyes were slightly sunken, and her hair was loose, but her lipstick was applied flawlessly.
The bedside table was littered with foundation, an eyebrow pencil, and blush—it looked like a makeshift vanity.
Finn stood in the doorway, observing the scene in total silence.
He was used to it.
His mother could fall ill, she could collapse, but she would never, under any circumstances, sacrifice her dignity.
Her appearance was her ultimate armor.
Grant walked over and sat down on the edge of the bed.
He stared at the makeup plastered on Yolanda's face, pausing in silence for two long seconds.
"You were just resuscitated, and this is what you're doing?"
Yolanda calmly snapped the compact shut and set down her lipstick, leaning back against her pillows.
"I'm perfectly fine. I'm sorry to make you come all this way."
"What exactly happened?" Grant demanded. "Why did you collapse out of nowhere?"
Yolanda's fingers twitched slightly, but when she spoke, she had completely compartmentalized her emotions, acting as though she hadn't just had a near-death meltdown.
"It's nothing. I've just been a bit fatigued lately. I know you're busy with the company, please don't worry about me."
Yolanda gave a brief, nonchalant update, her voice airy, as if discussing the weather.
Grant weighed his options, then stated,
"It's your call. You can stay here, transfer to another facility, or go home and hire a private nurse."
Yolanda paused for a heartbeat.
Finn's pulse spiked, his mind racing to formulate a counter-strategy.
Just then, Yolanda offered a serene smile.
"I think this place is quite nice. It's a prestigious public hospital, after all."
"Then I'll have my assistant upgrade you to a VIP suite," Grant nodded.
"Dad, Mom, we really should transfer you. The doctors here aren't equipped for your needs," Finn interjected.
Yolanda slowly raised her eyes, locking onto him.
"Mom, let me arrange a transfer," Finn insisted, layering genuine concern into his voice. "The private clinic uptown has a far better environment and specialized doctors. I can make the calls right now and move you by tomorrow."
"The doctors here aren't equipped?" Yolanda looked at him, a toxic, unreadable gleam in her eyes. "If the doctors here aren't good enough, why did you donate so much medical equipment to them? Millions of dollars, given away without blinking. Captain Fletcher certainly is generous."
