She leaned against the door for a very long time.
Late that night, Sienna had just settled into bed when a loud knock startled her.
Assuming it was Finn again, a spike of pure irritation flared in her chest.
She threw the covers off, grabbed her jacket, and yanked the door open.
Standing in the hallway was a staff member from the medical team, a man in his forties named Dudley.
"Dr. Sterling, we have an emergency. There was a major traffic accident on the outskirts of town. Multiple casualties have been rushed to the local hospital, and they're critically understaffed. We need you there for support."
Sienna immediately spun around and grabbed her medical kit.
"How many of us are going?"
"Just you for now. The others are still getting their gear together."
Without a second thought, she followed Dudley out the door.
The hallway lights were glaringly bright, making her eyes sting.
When they got downstairs, a vehicle was already idling, waiting for them.
Sienna climbed into the back seat while Dudley took the passenger side.
The car roared to life and sped away from the hotel.
She glanced out the window, watching the hotel lights fade into the swallowing darkness.

By the time Finn stepped out of the shower, it was nearly one in the morning.
Since they had landed, a profound sense of unease had settled in his gut. His ears had been pricked the entire time, constantly monitoring the room next door for any signs of movement.
He stepped out of his room out of habit and glanced at the crack beneath Sienna's door.
There was no light spilling out.
He frowned.
She hadn't adjusted to the time zone yet; there was no way she would be asleep this early.
He walked over and knocked firmly.
No answer.
He knocked again. Still nothing.
Something wasn't right. Knowing Sienna's fiery temper, if he pushed her buttons, she would definitely explode—she wouldn't just ignore him like this.
He pulled out his phone and dialed her number.
It rang several times, but she didn't pick up.
He dialed again. Still no answer.
Finn instantly bolted downstairs.
The receptionist on duty was a local woman whose English was heavily broken.
Finn asked if the guest in 306 had left, and after a quick check, the receptionist confirmed she had left with the medical team's vehicle.
Desperate to help the injured, she violently suppressed her growing suspicions and followed him up the stairs.
Dudley pushed open a door, revealing a barren office space.
The lights were on, but there were no patients, no hospital beds, and absolutely no medical equipment.
She spun around to question him, but the hallway behind her was completely empty.
She heard the rapid thud of dress shoes hitting concrete as footsteps sprinted down the stairs and faded into the distance.
Realizing she had walked into a trap, Sienna turned and bolted toward the stairs.
The second she reached the landing, two massive local men blocked her path.
They were tall and built like brick walls, towering over her menacingly.
Without a single word, they lunged forward and grabbed her arms in a brutal grip.
Her medical kit crashed to the floor, scattering gauze and medical tape everywhere.
She thrashed wildly, but their strength was overwhelmingly dominant.
One of the men produced a rag and clamped it fiercely over her mouth.
A cloyingly sweet, sickening scent invaded her nostrils, rushing straight to her brain.
She felt her eyelids grow unspeakably heavy. Her body lost all control, plummeting downward as if she had been tossed into a bottomless well.
She could hear her own heartbeat—slow, agonizingly slow, like a countdown.
Right before her eyes fluttered shut, her final, unbidden thought was of Finn's face...
