"Let's go see York first."
Finn didn't elaborate, and Sienna didn't push it, but she knew he already had his next move planned out.
York's room was on the third floor of the inpatient ward.
The nurses mentioned the boy hadn't eaten much over the past two days. He had lost weight, constantly cried for his mother, and was impossible to comfort.
When Sienna pushed the door open, York was curled up into a tiny ball on the bed, his face buried in the pillow, his little shoulders heaving with every sob.
Hearing footsteps, he looked up, and the raw disappointment that flooded his dark eyes was gut-wrenching.
Sienna didn't feel it as deeply as Finn did.
After all, York had only ever truly clung to Finn.
But right now, to York, Finn was nothing more than a terrifying stranger.
York looked utterly devastated. He dropped his head back down, tears streaming down his cheeks, his voice hoarse and tiny.
"I want my Mom... Give me my Mom back."
The doctor and nurse murmured quietly to the side.
"Where is the boy's mother? This can't keep going on. It's too cruel for a child his age."
Sienna pulled the doctor and nurse out into the hallway, closing the door behind her before speaking.
"His mother passed away."
The doctor and nurse exchanged a heavy look, shaking their heads in sorrow.
"Then there's nothing we can do. Physical injuries can be treated, but psychological trauma... that just takes time. Poor kid. He's so young."
After the medical staff walked away.
Sienna stood by the door, watching through the glass window.
Finn tried several times to reach out and hold York, but the boy violently thrashed away every single time.
A heavy ache settled in her chest.
It was tragic, but none of them could replace a mother.
When Maeve and Grant arrived, York was drinking porridge.
He swallowed three spoonfuls from the nurse before clamping his mouth shut, refusing to eat another bite. He curled up at the head of the bed, defensive and prickly as a frightened hedgehog.
Maeve stood by the doorway, glancing sideways at Grant.
Grant didn't have much of an emotional attachment to his grandson.
But seeing the child suffer like this made even him let out a heavy sigh.
