Sienna stood by the kitchen window for a long time. The water in her hand had gone completely cold, but she didn't even notice.
The silhouette of the distant buildings shifted from deep blue to pale gray, and then to a soft, golden hue. The morning light crept in inch by inch, illuminating the thin layer of snow on the windowsill.
She glanced down at the icy water in her glass, set it on the edge of the sink, and turned back to the bedroom.
Finn was still sleeping, his breathing even and deep.
Sienna quietly slipped back under the covers, turning on her side to face him, staring at him for a long time, unable to get enough.
Finn looked different when he slept compared to his usual self. His brow was unfurrowed, his jawline relaxed, and the corners of his mouth curved up slightly, as if he were having a good dream.
Sienna reached out and brushed a stray lock of hair from his forehead, her fingertips lightly tracing his brow bone before pulling back. She tucked the blanket around him and closed her eyes.
The two of them slept straight through the afternoon.
They were finally jolted awake by Maeve pounding on the front door.
"What time is it? You're still sleeping? You're both thirty years old, how can you be so irresponsible?"
Sienna felt a wave of embarrassment.
Finn, however, smoothly took over.
"Mom, it's New Year's Eve today. Aren't we supposed to be preparing the holiday dinner?"
"Exactly. Your father and I have been at the estate waiting for you all morning. When you didn't show up, I had to come over and invite you personally."
Finn laughed.
"Then let's spend New Year's Eve at our new place this year. I'll call Dad and have the driver bring him over."
Grant arrived shortly after.
He was wearing a burgundy sweater, the most festive outfit he had ever put on.
The kitchen was steaming. Sienna was wearing a new apron—a dark red one with a delicate winter plum blossom embroidered on the hem, a gift Maeve had given her a few days ago.
She was kneading dough. The counter was dusted with a thin layer of flour, and the dough was repeatedly pressed, folded, and pressed again under her skilled hands.
Maeve watched Sienna's kneading technique, her eyes full of admiration.
