Maeve held her bowl without looking up, her tone cool and detached.
"The old man is already pressuring them for kids? Young people will have children whenever they want. Why are you meddling?"
Grant wasn't annoyed by her reprimand. He set down his wine glass.
"I didn't say right away. I said next year."
"What's wrong with next year? Don't they have their own plans for next year?" Maeve put down her fork and shot him a look. "If you don't know what to say, just shut up and eat your food."
Grant opened his mouth, glanced at Finn, then at Sienna, and finally lowered his head, shoving a bite of food into his mouth. He chewed twice and didn't say another word.
Sitting next to them, Sienna watched the exchange, a very strange feeling welling up inside her.
This wasn't the kind of "family" that maintained polite distance to save face. It was an intimacy where they could bicker, roll their eyes at each other, and talk about anything without holding back.
Grant wasn't angry at Maeve's scolding; the way he lowered his head to eat even looked a bit like a pouting child. Maeve's words were sharp, but when she passed the condiments, she casually nudged his favorite garlic sauce closer to his plate.
Sienna had never imagined that she would one day sit at a table like this to share a meal.
She put down her silverware, stayed quiet for a few seconds, and then spoke.
"I really like kids."
The table fell silent for a moment.
"The Community Health Bridge project is progressing very smoothly right now. Once this phase is over, I'm planning to have a baby too."
She stunned herself as soon as the words left her mouth.
Before, this idea had merely been a hazy outline in her mind, unformed. It was only when she spoke it aloud that she realized the thought had been taking root in her heart for quite some time.
Maeve's fork froze in mid-air.
The hand Grant used to hold his wine glass also stopped.
Both of their eyes filled with uncontrollable joy.
Finn turned his head to look at Sienna.
His gaze fell on her face, trying to gauge just how serious she was from her expression.
He noticed the tips of her ears were turning a faint pink.
He suddenly remembered last night.
Or more accurately... the early hours of this morning.
