A layer of white covered the ground, crunching softly underfoot.
By the time they reached the Fletcher estate, it was nearly ten o'clock. Several groups of people were already seated in the living room. The sofa was piled high with holiday gifts and boxes, and the coffee table was laden with fruit platters and snacks.
Maeve, dressed in a formal red dress, was chatting with several aunts from the extended family. She raised a hand when she saw them walk in.
Finn led Sienna around, greeting everyone one by one.
Sienna stayed by his side, her demeanor natural and poised.
The initial assessing looks from the older relatives gradually shifted into expressions of approval.
One aunt took her hand.
"Finn has always been picky since he was a boy. He certainly has a great eye."
Sienna smiled and replied, "You flatter me," keeping her response perfectly polite without overdoing it.
Just as they were talking, a crisp voice rang out from the doorway.
"Sienna!"
Sienna turned her head. Georgina stood at the entrance, wearing a cream-colored puffer jacket.
She was holding a red gift box, her cheeks slightly flushed from the cold. She looked as sweet and round as a sugar-dusted marshmallow.
She changed her shoes, ran inside, placed the gift box on the coffee table, and naturally sidled up next to Sienna, looking up with a bright smile.
"Happy New Year!"
Sienna was thrilled to see her.
"What are you doing here? I thought we were going to meet up after the holidays?"
"I didn't have much going on in Metropolis, so I thought I'd come over and wish you a Happy New Year." Georgina said, her gaze sweeping the living room before she lowered her voice. "Where's Noah?"
"He went back to our hometown."
Georgina let out a small "oh," her expression unreadable.
"I'll go wish Maeve a Happy New Year then."
A little while later, Lily and Isaac arrived.
Lily's belly was noticeably rounder. Now that she was further along in her pregnancy, she walked with careful, measured steps.
Isaac stayed right beside her, half a step behind, his hand hovering protectively near her waist, his eyes entirely focused on his wife.
As soon as she walked in, Lily called out.
