By the time she finished the secondary treatments for the two elderly patients, it was already two-forty.
She packed her medical kit, and as soon as she turned around, she saw Master Thorne standing in the doorway.
Bonnie jumped, patting her chest to calm her racing heart. "Nathaniel, how do you walk without making a sound? You scared me to death."
Nathaniel Thorne scoffed and strode into the room.
Bonnie always felt like the old man had a sixth sense. Every time she visited the retirement estate, he managed to track her down with flawless precision.
"Kid, are you absolutely sure you won't reconsider becoming my apprentice?"
Nathaniel stepped close, a hint of urgency in his tone that completely stripped away his usual composed demeanor.
Bonnie let out a helpless sigh and tucked her acupuncture roll back into her bag.
"Nathaniel, I really have no intention of taking on a new mentor."
Upon hearing this, Nathaniel's face flushed red with indignation.
"What do you mean, taking on a new mentor? Your grandfather was your family. It was perfectly natural for him to teach you medicine, but by the standards of the National Medical Council, he wasn't your formal master. You have every right to join any lineage you want, and absolutely no one could say a bad word about it!"
Seeing the old man's desperate expression, a rush of warmth flooded Bonnie's chest, but her gaze remained as clear and resolute as ever.
"My situation is a bit complicated, Nathaniel. If I were to formally study under you, I'd only drag you down."
Nathaniel had lived a long, prestigious life. He was a titan in the traditional medical field, accustomed to people begging for the chance to learn from him.
When had he ever stooped so low to plead with a young woman?
His temper flared instantly, his face turning a deep crimson.
"Drag me down? Do you have any idea who I am?"
Bonnie stared back at his furious expression, blinking her large, innocent eyes.
"No."
Nathaniel almost choked on his own breath, clutching his chest as he glared at her.
Bonnie continued smoothly, "But that doesn't matter. I have the utmost respect for your medical ethics and your skills, Nathaniel. However, I won't compromise my principles to study under you just because you have high social standing or a prestigious reputation."
Nathaniel stared at her, taking in those crystal-clear eyes completely devoid of flattery or worldly greed.
He gave two heavy scoffs and turned to leave.
But after taking just one step, he stopped dead in his tracks.
