Quentin's breath hitched, his handsome features tightening instantly.
He jerked his wrist free, yanking the duvet back up to cover himself.
Then, he rolled over, turning his back to her once again.
The movement was incredibly childish, every inch of his posture screaming defensive sulking.
Watching him throw what amounted to a toddler's tantrum, Bonnie found herself caught between exasperation and amusement.
Forget it.
He was the patient, he couldn't see, and it was natural for him to be a little emotionally volatile right now.
She wasn't going to hold it against him.
Turning on her heel, she headed for the door.
Though Quentin was blind at the moment, his hearing and other senses were razor-sharp.
As the sound of her footsteps faded, he suddenly sat bolt upright in bed.
His jaw clenched tight, and he muttered a low curse.
"Heartless woman."
Abandoning a blind man just like that.
But before he could sink back into the pillows, the footsteps returned, growing louder.
Seeing him sitting up, Bonnie immediately spoke.
"Since you're already up, stay still."
She stepped up to the edge of the mattress. Taking in his cold yet clearly sulky expression, she asked softly,
"Can I get on the bed?"
Quentin's fingers instantly dug into the sheets.
What was she trying to do?
Crawling into his bed first thing in the morning?
He swallowed hard, his heart suddenly picking up speed.
Yet, he kept his face perfectly impassive, offering only a gruff, low hum of agreement.
"Yeah."
Taking that as permission, Bonnie kicked off her slippers and climbed lithely onto the mattress.
She settled cross-legged right behind him.
But as she moved closer, she realized just how massive the man was. Sitting right in front of her, he felt like an imposing, solid wall of muscle.
She stretched her arms out to test the angle, only to find she couldn't comfortably reach the top of his head from behind.
Left with no choice, she got back off the bed, unrolling her treatment kit on the nightstand instead.
"I'm going to start the treatment now. It won't hurt, so there's no need to tense up."
As she organized her instruments, she cleared her throat awkwardly.
