Sure enough, Quentin's brow furrowed deeply, his lips moving as he deliriously mumbled something again.
Curiosity getting the better of her, Bonnie leaned in a bit closer to listen.
She heard him whispering like he was sleepwalking, "Little Bun, don't go... don't leave me again..."
Bonnie froze for a moment, then muttered softly.
"Little Bun? Is that the nickname of the woman you like?"
"Sigh, you really are heartbroken."
"No wonder you're so physically strained. You'd rather suffer than seek out another woman."
She clicked her tongue twice, her tone carrying a hint of genuine realization.
"I have to say, you really are a devoted guy."
She took a deep breath and forcefully pried his hands off her waist.
Then, she pushed herself up on the bed and smoothed down her wrinkled clothes.
"I'm going to pretend none of this happened, so you don't have to feel guilty. Don't worry."
With that, she bent down and patiently took off his leather shoes.
She pulled the thin blanket over him and tiptoed out of the room to make him some detox tonic.
Meanwhile, Quentin fell into a distant, heavy dream that night.
It had been years since he dreamed of his mother, or of that clingy little girl.
In the dream, his gentle mother led a little girl with pigtails toward him.
His mother stroked his head and softly asked the girl to keep him company.
She said he was too quiet and needed someone to make him smile.
The little girl tilted her head and asked, "What's my reward?"
His mother smiled and patted her head. "Whatever you want."
The little girl jumped with joy, "Then I want lots and lots of candy, lots and lots of dolls, and lots and lots of meat buns!"
He looked at the chubby little girl. Her face was so round and puffy, like a little steamed bun.
So he mockingly called her "Little Bun," coldly telling her to stay away from him.
But she was exceptionally clingy. No matter how much he glared at her or tried to chase her away, she refused to leave.
