Bonnie was stunned. Her mind buzzed loudly, as if a swarm of bees were flying around inside.
She clutched the edge of the blanket tightly with both hands, pulling it up even higher to cover most of her face, leaving only a pair of wide, panicked eyes exposed.
"Wasn't it you who said it..."
Her voice came out muffled from beneath the covers, tinged with grievance and embarrassment.
Seeing her act like a frightened quail, the smile on Quentin's lips deepened.
He casually toyed with the small box, his gaze filled with playfulness.
"When I said we should act like a normal married couple, I meant living together and not being so distant like before."
He leaned in closer, hovering over her. "But..."
"If you want this so badly, I don't mind obliging you."
"No, no, no! No need to oblige!"
Bonnie waved her hands frantically in terror, shaking her head like a rattle.
"I thought you wanted... I thought this was my duty as Mrs. Vance."
The smile on Quentin's lips slowly faded. He stared at her intently, his eyes as deep as a bottomless pool.
A moment later, he casually tossed the small box onto the nightstand.
The plastic box hit the wooden surface with a soft clatter.
"If you aren't doing this willingly, we don't need to take it this far."
His voice turned cold, reverting to his usual detached and distant demeanor.
Bonnie bit her lower lip, a faint trace of bitterness rising in her chest.
It was true; she wasn't doing this willingly.
How long had she and Quentin even known each other?
Even though they were married, when it came down to it, they were just in a transactional relationship.
But whenever she thought of the two hundred thousand dollars deposited into her bank account that afternoon, a heavy weight settled in her heart.
Since she was young, her grandfather had taught her that if you take someone's money, you solve their problems.
She had to give something in return.
Otherwise, holding onto such a massive sum would make her feel like her hands were burning every time she tried to sleep.
Quentin seemed to see right through her inner conflict. He lay back down, resting his hands over his stomach, staring at the ceiling.
"You are my wife. That money is yours to take; it's the security I provide for you."
He turned his head, his gaze landing on her conflicted little face.
