I Stopped Waiting and Started Loving novel Chapter 223

Bonnie nodded, choking back a sob, her eyes red.

"When it happened, I was attending university in Capital City, which is how I survived. Over the years, I've been investigating in secret, trying to clear my grandfather's name. But Gideon covered his tracks perfectly. I haven't been able to find a single shred of concrete evidence."

"All I know is that whenever I sign up for the medical licensing exam, my qualification is inexplicably revoked, or even if I pass, the results are voided."

"No one else would go to such lengths to block me. My grandfather spent his life doing good deeds; he didn't have any other enemies."

Hearing this, Nathaniel didn't immediately agree.

He furrowed his brow, tapping his fingers against the table as his expression grew thoughtful.

"Bonnie, I'm afraid this situation might not be as simple as you think."

Bonnie paused, looking at him in confusion.

Nathaniel sighed and spoke slowly. "If Gideon really was the one who poisoned the well, and he's been so blatantly targeting you all these years by blocking your license, wouldn't that just be exposing his own guilt?"

"Furthermore, I worked with Gideon for a few years, so I know him reasonably well. Yes, he is power-hungry, overly ambitious, and lacking in morals."

"But he's a coward. He is exceptionally cautious. From what I observed, he doesn't have the guts to commit cold-blooded murder, let alone poison a well and wipe out an entire family."

Bonnie instinctively rushed to argue. "It's impossible. It has to be him."

"Six years ago, when I confronted him, he explicitly warned me never to practice medicine, claiming that path was a dead end for me. If he wasn't guilty, why would he spend all these years targeting me, strangling my chances of getting a license?"

Nathaniel's frown deepened. Clearly, he couldn't connect the dots either.

"Tell you what—leave the investigation to me. As for your license, I want to see exactly who is pulling the strings in the shadows. It seems the National Medical Council and the Federal Health Authority are completely corrupt nowadays. It's high time they were cleaned up."

Quentin, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke up slowly. "The sudden death of that high-ranking official also needs to be looked into. With Grandpa Hayes's skills, there's no way he killed a patient."

Bonnie turned to look at him through the hazy steam of the tea. The man's profile was sharp and unreadable, yet it inexplicably made her feel secure.

A wave of profound gratitude swelled in her eyes.

Nathaniel shot Quentin a look of approval and nodded. "You're right, Quentin. Leave this to me. I'm retired now, and I've got nothing but time. Harrison and I were friends for decades. I won't let him die with this injustice."
