Sophie didn't know when she drifted off.
Gavin had to take a phone call regarding revisions to his thesis. When he emerged from his home office to grab a glass of water, he found Sophie curled up on the sofa, mindlessly scrolling through her phone.
He grabbed his laptop, set it on the armrest, and sat down so Sophie could lean against his shoulder.
Eventually, Sophie just lay down, resting her head in his lap. Gwen had been way too energized the night before; every time Sophie had been on the verge of sleep, Gwen had practically yelled her awake.
She closed her eyes, the rhythmic clicking of Gavin's keyboard acting as the perfect lullaby. Within minutes, she was asleep again.
When she woke up, Gavin's t-shirt was draped over her. He had already closed his laptop and was quietly watching her.
"Are you done? Why didn't you wake me?" Sophie sat up, noticing Gavin was shirtless. He had also angled the AC vents toward the ceiling so it wouldn't blow directly on her.
"It's rare to see you sleep so peacefully. I didn't have the heart to. You haven't been sleeping well lately, have you?"
Gavin stretched his legs, which were completely numb from bearing her weight.
He had noticed she was asleep shortly after he started working. He had thought about carrying her to the bed, but the second he moved her head, she let out an annoyed groan, nuzzled deeper into his lap, and found an even cozier position.
After that, there was no way he was moving her.
"Your phone rang twice. I didn't want it to wake you, so I put it on silent."
He handed the phone to her. She checked the missed calls—it was an unsaved number.
But she knew exactly whose it was. That same number had blown up her phone multiple times over the last few days. It was Harold Harper.
Sophie inhaled sharply. Peace and quiet were truly a luxury. There was always some unwanted noise or someone she desperately wanted to avoid clawing at her door.
