I Walked Away Seven Years Too Late But Right on Time novel Chapter 182

"What kind of man is he?" Luke suddenly asked.

It took Sophie a long moment to process the question and realize he was talking about Gavin Gilmore.

"You still can't remember anything?" she asked gently.

"Everything after St. Moritz is a blank. There are some things I need to ask you."

Luke handed his phone to Sophie. The screen displayed his email inbox, showing a handful of exchanges between them from March of the previous year, right after she had left.

Attached was an ultrasound image. Five weeks pregnant. The date was March 6th.

"Why didn't you tell me before you left?"

Sophie remained silent.

His tone in those emails had been vicious. Whenever he lost his temper, his words turned to ice.

Even now, reading those messages sent a fresh wave of agony through her. Every sentence was a blade twisting in her chest.

"Sophie, I need to know. Every time I force myself to remember, my head feels like it's splitting open. But I want to know. I have the right to know. If I don't, this will never let me go."

"After I got the results, I tested the waters. I asked if you ever thought about having a baby with our genes. You didn't even hesitate. You said absolutely not, that maintaining our current status was fine."

"The pregnancy was an accident. It must have happened during our time in St. Moritz. I didn't know how to explain that five-percent failure rate to you. I didn't tamper with anything, but I wasn't sure if you'd believe me. While I was debating whether to tell you, I saw you with Eileen. That day was my birthday..."

"At first, I held onto the fantasy that you would come looking for me. But you never did. The moment I made the decision to terminate the pregnancy, that fantasy died completely."

"If you had just told me before you left, maybe things would have ended differently."

Luke's eyes grew red with unshed emotion.

"No, they wouldn't have. I was never your priority. Last March, after we had been apart for a whole year, she threw chemical cleaner at me just for looking at a photo of you... And your response was to make me sign the Leniency Waiver."

Remembering that agonizing moment still sent chills down her spine.

Eileen was always the protected one, while Sophie was left battered and entirely powerless to fight back.

"I'm such a bastard."

Tears blurred Sophie's vision. "You really are... A total bastard."

She had worked so hard to banish these memories, to never speak of them again.
