I was his allergen she was his cure what if this allergen turns lethal? novel Chapter 4

Chapter 4

I murmured a vague response.

Then I slipped my mother’s tablet into my bag.

I made an excuse about having somewhere to be, grabbed the marriage certificate, and went to see a lawyer.

The young attorney took one look and winced.

“This is a fake marriage certificate. We’ve been seeing a lot of these lately. You don’t need a divorce. You can actually sue him for fraud.”

I felt so tired. My whole body sagged.

All these years…

I was such a fool. I didn’t even have the right to be angry.

Turned out, the family I cherished wasn’t my family at all.

The child I’d nearly died giving birth to-the one who came out of my body-wasn’t even mine. He just happened to look a little like me.

How could he do this to me?

Right before my mother died, I became the thing she hated most-a mistress.

And I even gave birth to the thing she despised-a bastard child.

I went home in daze.

Willow was there again. She jumped up when she saw me.

“Oh, Rowan! You’re back. I was just leaving. I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d check on Jasper.”

I blocked her path.

“Don’t leave. We need to talk.”

I pulled out the fake marriage certificate. My voice was calm, but shattered.

“I’d like an explanation.”

I was like a masochist. What explanation could there be? He’d lied for six years. But I wanted to hear it anyway.

I begged him silently. Lie to me again. Tell me the lawyer’s wrong. Tell me I’m your wife.

Tell me these years were sweet and simple and real.

Tell me the allergy was just a curse, and all my prayers are about to break it.

Reed looked uncomfortable under my stare. Finally, he spoke.

“Rowan… Willow had an emergency a while back. She needed treatment, and without a legal guardian to sign off, it was complicated. So I had to… but you never asked.”

Chapter 4

My ears were ringing. I couldn’t hear anymore.

Stop. Stop talking.

I didn’t even have a title. I had no right at all.

Reed touched my shoulder.

“Rowan, calm down.”

But I was calm. I didn’t understand what he meant. I didn’t dare raise my hand. Didn’t dare yell at him to get out.

Because-I was the mistress.

I almost wanted to laugh. In this house, I was the extra one.

I remembered-shortly after the “wedding,” he started traveling for work.

Thank God I gave birth to a kid. Gave them the perfect excuse. “Allergies.” Three whole months, every year.

Must’ve been so convenient for them.

Reed stared at me.

“Rowan, don’t do this. Willow and I-it’s a fake marriage. We’re going to dissolve it. She’s just been sick for years, so I haven’t gotten around to it.

I’ll take care of it in a few days.”

Willow came over to apologize, but she knocked over a shelf.

CRASH!

The shelf tipped.

Reed instinctively reached for me-then let go and shielded Willow instead.

The shelf crashed into me. My arm split open, blood pouring out.

And the two of them-father and son-crowded around Willow.
