Chapter 5
Reed came back to the room. Jasper looked behind him, confused.
“Where’s Mom?”
Reed couldn’t quite name what he was feeling. Something felt off.
“Mom had to go out. I’m going to find her. You stay here with Willow m… with Auntie. I’ll be right back.”
He suddenly realized how wrong those titles sounded.
Before, he’d thought it didn’t matter. Kids say whatever.
Reed bolted out the door, searching everywhere. But Rowan was nowhere to be found.
She’d never done this before.
No screaming. No crying. She just… left. Like the whole world had abandoned her.
She’d gotten so thin.
Every winter, Rowan seemed to waste away.
During the nine months they were together, she came back to life. Cooked elaborate meals, smiled constantly, soaked up every moment of family time.
But this year…
This year was different.
Starting with the reunion dinner that never happened.
The smile that never came.
Everything was telling him-Rowan knew something.
She was just heartbroken. Couldn’t believe it was real. Wanted to argue, to prove it wrong. But then she realized it was all true.
Reed ran his hands through his hair, frustrated.
When he got back home, Willow was holding Jasper.
Jasper clung to her like she really was his mother.
“Sweetie, if both moms fell in the river, who would you save first?”
Jasper’s eyes went wide. He didn’t hesitate for a second.
“You, Willow mommy.”
Willow smiled smugly and kissed his forehead.
Seeing this, Reed felt a sickening twist in his gut.

Chapter 5
How could she teach a kid to say things like that?
Little by little, she’d been planting the idea in Jasper’s head that Willow mattered more than Rowan.
He walked over and picked up Jasper. His tone turned cold.
“Willow, you should go. I’ll call you if I need anything.”
Willow wasn’t satisfied. She tried to stall.
“Is Rowan throwing a tantrum? She’ll be back in a few days. Let me stay a little longer. Let me spend more time with him.”
Jasper cheered.
Yet that made Reed feel even worse.
He shook his head, trying to keep his temper in check.
“No need. Go home.”
“Maybe just one night…”
Reed finally snapped.
“I said NO. I need some space.”
Willow left reluctantly, resentment clear in her eyes.
Once she was gone, Reed turned to Jasper, his voice firm.
“You can’t call Willow ‘Mommy anymore. You only have one mom. Got it?”
Jasper looked confused.
“Why? I like calling her Mommy.”
Reed forced himself to stay patient.
“Everyone only has one mom. Like me-I only have Grandma. So you can’t have two. You have to pick one.”
But then Jasper said something that made Reed’s blood run cold.
“Then I want Willow mommy. I don’t want Mom.”
Reed suddenly lost it.
“Do you have any idea how messed up that is? Your mom carried you for nine months. Gave birth to you! How could you say that?!”
