Chapter 10 See You in Court
Demi frowned. On the other end of the line, Phoebe must’ve heard Nevin shouting.
She hung up without thinking.
Nevin’s mood worsened when he saw that.
Who is she even talking to?
The divorce papers lay between them. Demi’s heart was surprisingly calm.
“Did you sign it?” She asked.
Her expression was calm, like she was just asking if he’d had dinner.

Nevin’s brow twitched. He didn’t know whether to laugh in anger or think Demi was just throwing a tantrum. “You don’t want Orion anymore? You carried him for nine months?” he asked again, his voice rising.
“That’s right. I don’t want him.” Demi lifted her head, meeting his eyes.
Her eyes had always been bright and clear, but they were calm–emptied of all the affection they once held.
“I don’t want him,” she said quietly. “He doesn’t even want me as his mom.”
Still, by the time she said that, her chest still ached.
Nevin’s heart tightened. He frowned and said, “Orion’s still a kid. He doesn’t understand what he says can hurt you. No matter what, you’re still his mother.”
He couldn’t understand. How could the woman who once treated Orion as her whole world now talk about
giving him up so easily?
“There’s no real grudge between a mother and her child,” he said coldly. “You don’t have to hold a grudge against a six–year–old.”
Nevin stood there, his usual calm and elegant composure turning icy. The slight furrow between his brows made him look distant and almost cold.
Right now, his expression showed nothing but irritation, as if he couldn’t believe Demi was being so petty with a six–year–old.
Demi’s lips pressed into a thin line until they turned pale.
“That’s enough,” Nevin said flatly. “Don’t bring up divorce again. I don’t want to hear it a second time.”
He started to walk away, but Demi stepped in front of him. “I’m serious about the divorce,” she said, blocking his path.
She held out the papers, voice calm but firm. “Sign it, Nevin. I want this over as soon as possible.”

A vein pulsed on his forehead. “Demi, what do you even want? When will this end?”
His anger boiled over. He snatched the divorce papers and tore them apart in front of her.
“I said no divorce!” he shouted, the words sharp and final. “Don’t ever bring it up again!”
He flung the shredded pages into the air. They fluttered to the floor like broken snowflakes.
Demi didn’t flinch. She looked straight at Nevin, her voice sharp and steady. “If you won’t sign the divorce papers, then I’ll see you in court. I don’t care if the whole city finds out.”
Nevin’s eyes darkened. “Do you even know what you’re saying?” He snapped, grabbing her wrist hard.
“You want a divorce because there’s someone else, don’t you? That lawyer that’s helping you. Is he the one?”
Demi glared at him like he couldn’t be reasoned with.
She tried to pull her hand free, but the harder she struggled, the tighter he held on.
Demi struggled to pull her hand free, her face turning pale. When the pain finally made her cry out, Nevin froze. His grip loosened, and she yanked her arm back.
A red mark circled her wrist–angry, swollen, and hard to miss.
“I …”
Nevin’s voice faltered, his eyes dimming. He reached out, wanting to check her wrist, but she stepped back sharply.
“Get out,” she said coldly, turning her face away.
“Dem-”
“I said get out!”
Her voice cracked. She stubbornly tilted her body to the side.
Nevin saw the tear slip down her cheek before she quickly turned away.
His hand hung in the air for a long time. Nevin’s fingers tightened into a fist, loosened, then clenched again. At last, he turned and walked out.
The moment the door clicked shut behind him. Demi wiped her tears roughly, hating herself for crying in front of him.
She took a few shaky breaths, forcing herself to calm down. When she finally looked at her phone, she saw over ten missed calls from Phoebe.
Of course. Phoebe must have heard everything that happened just now.
Demi adjusted her emotion, took a deep breath, and called her back.

“Demi! Are you okay? That jerk didn’t hurt you, did he?!”
Phoebe’s panicked voice burst through the line, so vivid that Demi could almost picture her friend pacing with worry.
“I’m fine; he didn’t-”
“Where are you? I’m coming to get you right now!”
Phoebe cut her off before she could finish.
She must have overheard Nevin’s furious shouting earlier and assumed Nevin had abused her best friend.
“Phoebe, really, I’m okay,” Demi said gently. “Once the divorce is finalized, I’ll come back.”
“No way!” Phoebe’s tone grew firm.
“I don’t trust him. What if that scumbag lost control and hit you? How am I supposed to help you? Demi, you need to get out of there. Send me your address! I’ll come now!”
“Phoebe…”
“Demi, no excuses! Text me your location. I’m coming now!”
Phoebe was as stubborn as ever. Once she made up her mind, there was no changing it. Demi knew her personality all too well.
“Alright,” Demi finally said softly. “Drive safe, okay?”
Phoebe’s family had businesses all over the country. She happened to be in the neighbouring city. Phoebe told Demi to wait an hour. She’d be there to take her away.
About an hour later, Demi’s phone rang.
It was Phoebe. She was already waiting outside the gated neighborhood.
Demi quickly changed clothes and headed downstairs.
She found Nevin sitting in the living room.
He was sitting upright on the living room couch, a cold, unreadable expression on his face. When he saw her coming down, he thought she was there to make peace.
Nevin looked away, pretending not to care.
Demi’s steps paused for a moment before she walked toward the door.
“It’s late at night; where are you going?”
It wasn’t until Demi reached the doorway that Nevin realized she wasn’t here to coax him but was leaving

the house.
Bang!
Something crashed behind her. Nevin must have thrown something. His voice followed, sharp and mocking. “So that’s it? Heading out this late to meet your secret lover?”
Demi let out a low laugh, her tone icy.
“Yeah, I couldn’t show that person to you,” she said, turning to meet his glare. “But not nearly as shameful as you, Mr. Blackwell–parading your lover around the house like it’s something to celebrate.”
She didn’t bother to look at his face again. Demi just kept walking, heels clicking hard against the floor.
He cheated. And now he thinks everyone else would betray their marriage like him?
Outside, Phoebe’s car pulled up right on time.
“Demi, get in!”
Demi opened the passenger door and slid in beside her. It had been years since they last saw each other. The moment Demi sat down, Phoebe unbuckled her seatbelt and wrapped her arms around her, bursting into tears.
“Hey, hey, I’m fine, okay?” Demi whispered, her eyes burning.
She forced the tears back. If she cried too, Phoebe would only cry harder.
After a long silence, Phoebe wiped away her tears and suddenly grinned. “Alright, enough crying. The night’s still young! Demi, let’s go. We’re getting drinks. Tonight, you cry if you need to, scream if you want. Tomorrow, that jerk will realize he’ll never measure up to you!”
Before Demi could respond, Phoebe slammed the clutch, turned the wheel, and sped off down the road like a storm.
“Drinks? I’ll pass.”
“Oh, come on. You can drink your heart out tonight. I’ve got you covered.”
“I’m pregnant,” Demi said softly. “I can’t drink.”
“What?!”
Screech!
The tires screeched as Phoebe hit the brakes hard. The car jolted to a stop, the sound slicing through the night air.
She stared at Demi, completely dumbfounded. “You’re getting divorced and still carrying that trash boy’s kid? Does he know about this?”
Demi almost laughed at how Phoebe called Nevin a trash boy. She shook her head but said nothing.

Before she could explain, a car honked loudly from behind. “Hey! Can’t you drive? Just because it’s a fancy car doesn’t mean you can block the road!”
Phoebe shot the driver a glare through the rearview mirror. She muttered, “Fine. I’ll take you back to my place.”
By the time they got to the hotel, it was late. The two women stayed up for a long time and talked until Demi finally fell asleep out of exhaustion.
The next morning, her phone rang, dragging her out of a deep sleep. The sunlight was already pouring through the curtains.
She answered drowsily.
On the other end came the deep, familiar voice of Nevin.
“Demi. Orion wants your chowder.”
Her sleepiness faded. Her tone stayed calm. “So?”
