She paused. Instead of calling Wayne, she shot him a quick message on Instagram. “You still awake?”

He replied right away. “Yeah. What’s going on?”

She called him right after that. The line barely rang twice before he answered.

“Demi? It’s very late… Don’t tell me you’re missing me already,” he joked, voice casual.

A faint smile tugged at her lips. “Of course. I’ve been thinking about my favorite overbooked hotshot lawyer.”

They exchanged a few teasing lines before Demi got serious. She asked about moving up the court date.

She needed it done fast and she needed his help.

Wayne had already pulled some strings before. He’d said the soonest opening was two weeks out.

Even now, that window hadn’t opened.

“Demi, you and…” Wayne almost asked what the hell Nevin had done this time to make her want out so fast. But he bit it back.

Didn’t matter. He was on her side.

“Alright. I’ll clear a few things off my desk. I’ll prioritize your divorce first.”

“Thanks, Wayne. Seriously.”

“Oh, don’t start with that again. If you say thank you one more time, I’m gonna get real annoyed.”

“Okay, okay. You win.”

They talked a little more before hanging up. As soon as the call ended, Demi wired him two million. She figured he might not take it if she sent it directly, and that could get awkward between them.

So she texted Lewis, got Wayne’s firm account, and sent another two million to that instead.

She’d heard Wayne never touched divorce cases for less than a million.

His clients were always the super rich. Even the smallest settlements usually hit eight figures.

Two million was just the opening bid.

The next few days passed without a hitch.

Demi went to work like she always did. Orion knew better than to call Carol or beg to go to the Snow Mansion after school.

Nevin, as usual, sent over everything Demi needed. Nothing had changed on the surface.

While juggling Blackwell Group’s business, he kept tabs on her too.

He and Orion were both waiting. Waiting for her anger o cool. Waiting for the hormones to pass so they could finally talk her into coming home.

Nevin even started asking Jenna from the office for tips. When Demi’s belly got bigger and she came back to the Blackwell Villa, he wanted to make sure he took care of her right.

But he never saw it coming.

“Mr. Blackwell…”

Joe stood at the door, hesitation thick in his voice.

Nevin didn’t respond. He just stared at him, irritation growing by the second.

Joe rubbed at his forehead nervously. His hands trembled even though there wasn’t a drop of sweat to wipe.

“What is it?”

“It’s Mrs. Blackwell… The court summons…”

Joe kept his eyes on Nevin’s face as he laid the envelope on his desk.

Nevin looked down. The bold black letters read Holocross District Court.

His gut tightened. His eyes landed on the date.

July 5th. 10 a.m.

That was two weeks from now.

The summons had come out of nowhere.

Everything he’d planned. Everything he’d pictured. Shattered.
