Nevin sat up, fully awake, and spotted the stack of folders in front of Rhea.

It hit him then. While he’d been out cold, she’d stayed busy working without even stopping for lunch.

“Appreciate you handling all this,” he said.

Rhea gave a calm smile. “It’s part of the job.

“Mr. Blackwell, would you like a cup of tea?”

“Sure.”

Nevin nodded.

Rhea stood and left to prepare it. By the time she came back holding the tea, Nevin wasn’t in the office

anymore.

His jacket lay wrinkled across the couch. Rhea picked it up and started steaming out the creases.

That steamer had been something Demi left behind at the office.

Nevin returned from the restroom. He paused when he saw her steaming his jacket.

He opened his mouth on reflex. Rhea turned her head and smiled. “Mr. Blackwell, your tea’s ready.”

Nevin kept a neutral expression. He didn’t question her. He just thought it figured. Demi trained her, after all. Rhea carried her imprint in everything she did.

Demi didn’t wake up until sometime between three and four

in the Her

stomach dragged her out

of sleep.

The sun had turned brutal with July closing in. Harsh light poured through the window at an angle.

Thank God for the AC. She had a thin blanket draped over her.

“Dad, why didn’t you wake me?” She blinked, still groggy, and finally spotted Roderick sitting at her desk.

She stretched her arms above her head.

These quick naps stolen in the middle of a busy day always felt the best. She felt sharper now. Her body wasn’t tired anymore.

“Why bother waking you?” Roderick said, closing the folder in his hands. “You’re hungry, right? Let’s head home. We’re cutting out early today.”

Demi gave a tired laugh. She’d just woken up, and now they were heading straight to dinner? Her routine really was turning into a lazy cycle.

Still, that nap did wonders. She felt amazing.

Her whole body was wired, and she had a pile of work to finish. There wasn’t much time to waste.

She opened her mouth to turn him down, but her stomach let out a long, hollow gurgle.

The sound stretched through the room.

Roderick grinned. “Let’s go. There’s soup on the stove.

Demi smiled and rubbed her stomach. She followed him out.

“That Blackwell kid finally figured it out,” Roderick said out of nowhere as they stepped into the elevator.

“Too little, too late though.”

Demi started to ask what he meant, but before she could, Roderick pulled a bag of cherries out of nowhere and handed it to her.

That’s when it clicked. Nevin had been sending her imported fruit every day.

Roderick always had a grip on everything happening in the company.

He’d also heard from Lewis that Nevin was sending her a ridiculous amount of fruit.

What he didn’t expect was just how far it had gone. Every single person on the executive floor got a share.

While Demi was passed out, Roderick had taken a stroll past the executive wing.

He noticed fresh fruit on every desk and realized Nevin was behind all of it.

These weren’t just normal fruits. They were flown in fresh that morning. The shipping alone probably cost more than the fruit itself.

If that boy had treated his daughter like this from the beginning, things would never have ever gotten this bad.

Demi glanced down at the cherries and shook her head. “I’m over them.”

“Over them, huh.”

Roderick looked thoughtful for a beat. When they stepped out of the elevator, he casually handed the cherries to the girls at the front desk.

After what counted as “dinner,” Demi wanted to head back to the office. But her parents weren’t having it.

She didn’t want to stress them out, so she kept quiet and slipped away to One Studio instead.

Angel had just gotten home from work when she got the message about having to stay late. As soon as she found out Demi was going to the office too, she lit up.

“Can you make some soup and light food, ma’am? I’ll call in a bit. Please bring it to the office later.”

Her idol said she’d be working until eleven tonight. Angel didn’t waste a second. She already had the late- night meal in motion.
