Chapter 123 Back to Work
“I said I don’t want it.” Demi’s tone dropped hard. Her face turned sour. “Get out.”

Angel blinked. She could feel it. Demi treated her one way outside the office, and completely different inside it.
Still, she didn’t push back. “Didn’t mean to intrude.”
Once the door shut, Demi finally eased up. It felt like she’d been walking around with thorns on her skin.
She pressed her fingers to her brow and grabbed her phone to order a bowl of Cajun shrimp stew.
Phoebe had gone on a work trip to the next city over.
Back at the company, Demi stayed behind to handle backend work. She’d barely stepped away from her desk all day.
Angel gave one of the food jars to a female coworker she passed in the hallway.
She kept the other for herself.
Her mom had sent two meals just like she’d asked.
“My mom’s cooking is seriously so good…” she mumbled and glanced at the closed office door.
Something felt off with Demi lately. More than off, she seemed a little unstable.
That night they’d eaten Cajun boil together, Demi had been warm. Normal. Even friendly. When she tried the dipping sauce Angel made, her eyes had actually lit up a little.
Angel had kept calling her “Demi” that night, and she didn’t seem to mind.
But here at work, the second she tried to get even a little friendly, Demi shut her down.
The next morning, Angel came in early with breakfast and waited outside the office.
Phoebe wasn’t due back till later in the day. Demi was going to be on her own that morning.
From a distance, Demi saw her waiting and frowned.
She felt like this assistant was trying way too hard to get on her good side.
And she couldn’t figure out why. Angel came from a good family. She grew up around here. Both of her parents were professors. What was there to gain from her?
“Morning, Ms. Snow.”
“Morning.”
Demi kept her face blank, unlocked the door, and walked straight inside.
Angel didn’t move. She just stood there, thinking. Demis coldness was starting to feel a little too personal.

Chapter 124 A Line Crossed

Earlier, Angel had seen Demi greet other coworkers who said hello to her, replying with a polite good morning.
But when it came to her, all she got was a cold grunt.
“Ms. Snow, have you had breakfast? My mom made pancakes this morning. Would you like to try some?
“And this soy milk too. She ground it fresh at dawn. She is retired now and loves experimenting with food. It tastes just as good as anything outside.”
Angel kept talking. Demi’s impatience grew clearer by the second, though she forced herself to hold it in.
“Demi…”
“Stop talking.”
The moment Angel said her name, Demi snapped.
Her voice turned icy. “Ms. Porter, I hired you to work, not to flatter your boss.”
Before Angel could explain, Demi continued coldly, “If you think you cannot handle this job, submit your resignation as soon as possible.”
The entire office fell silent.
Angel froze, clearly stunned.
She had only brought breakfast to show some concern, et she had somehow angered her idol.
