Chapter 40 The Audacity

How could someone like Demi, who was capable and lucky enough to marry Nevin, possibly have hundreds of thousands to drop on a few outfits?
“Let go!”
Demi’s face darkened. Whether intentionally or not, Rhea was gripping her hand particularly hard.
“Demi, I just want to know if this is Mr. Blackwell’s money. And are you buying these work outfits because you want to come back to Blackwell Group? Are you trying to compete with me?”
Smack!
Before she could finish, Demi slapped her hard across the face and yanked her hand back, looking at Rhea coldly. “Who do you think you are? What gives you the right to question me?”
Even if she was spending Nevin’s money, it was perfectly justified. Even Nevin himself had no right to complain.
Let alone Rhea.
And she had the audacity to interrogate her!
“You!” Rhea’s cheek stung. The slap had knocked some sense into her.
She’d just been so provoked by Demi that she’d almost lost control.
“D-Demi, that’s not what I meant. I’m just concerned about you.”
Resentment filled Rhea’s eyes, but her expression shifted in an instant. “Demi, I’m sorry. I really was just worried about you. Are you buying work outfits because you’re starting a job?”
She was still trying to fish for information, but Demi had seen through her game long ago.
Demi went to the waiting area to wait for the sales associates to pack everything up for checkout. She hadn’t expected Rhea to shamelessly follow her.
“Demi, it’s been so long since I’ve seen you in these styles. I kind of miss the days when I worked with you.”
Rhea said with feigned sincerity. Demi had indeed shown her a lot of kindness back then.
Demi continued to ignore her. Rhea didn’t get upset and just sat nearby, staring at her.

Soon, several sales associates came over carrying dozens of bags, placing them one by one at Demi’s feet. After checkout, they’d arrange delivery to her home.
The sales associate handed over the receipt with a smile. “The total is 1,105,000 dollars.”
“How much?” Rhea gasped.
The sales associate gave her a subtly contemptuous glance.
This was the woman from earlier-a shameless homewrecker who had the audacity to act arrogant in front of the wife.
Demi glanced at the receipt. The cheapest item was 58,000 dollars, the most expensive was 128,000 dollars.
She pulled out her card and handed it to the sales associate.
Rhea seethed with resentment. Why could Demi casually drop over a million dollars without batting an eye?
Meanwhile, she had to pinch every penny, and even a basic 20,000- or 30,000-dollar outfit would pain her for ages.
Not to mention she was being bled dry by her relentless leech of a father.
Rhea stared at the rows of elegant shopping bags at Demi’s feet with burning envy.
These were worth a million dollars.
She remembered how Demi used to find excuses to buy her gifts when they occasionally went shopping together.
Rhea’s first luxury item had been a gift from Demi.
The most expensive work dress in her closet had also been a gift from Demi after her promotion.
Her mind started scheming again.
“Demi, why did you suddenly buy so many work dresses? Can you even wear them all?”
Rhea smiled sweetly, trying to butter Demi up as she reached for one of the bags on the floor.
