The reason she agreed to come back wasn’t that she missed Orion.
She just wanted to return these two things to Nevin in person.

At that moment, Nevin seemed to realize there was no way to keep Demi anymore, and his heart tightened in a dull ache.
After giving the things back, Demi turned to leave, but a small hand caught her sleeve.
She looked back.
Orion’s face was streaked with tears. “Mom, don’t go! I don’t want you to leave!”
He cried out loud, clinging tightly to Demi’s hand.
“Stay tonight, please. For Orion-just keep him company one last night.”
Nevin’s fists clenched, the edges of the ring digging painfully into his palm.
Demi looked down. Orion’s tears streamed down his cheeks like little rivers.
She sighed inwardly. Since Orion was born, she had hardly ever seen him cry like this.
Her heart softened. For the last time, she decided to grant Orion this small wish.
“Be good, Orion. Mom will run your bath.”
Hearing this, Orion looked uncertainly at Nevin before slowly letting go of her hand.
Demi didn’t look at either of them. She turned and went to the bathroom to run the hot water.
Just like before, she took care of Orion every night-preparing his bath, laying out his pajamas, checking on him after he fell asleep to make sure he was covered up.
She had once enjoyed every bit of it.
But now, it meant nothing to her.
“Dad, did Mom give back the ring because she doesn’t want you anymore?”
In the bedroom, Orion sniffled and asked Nevin, puzzled.
He thought Demi didn’t come home because he had hurt her, or because he said he liked Rhea and not her, and that was why she was upset and left.

Orion obediently lay down, his puffy eyes still glued to Demi.
She ignored him. Before she finished the last story, Orion had already drifted off.
