He grabbed the wine glass and drank more than half in a single gulp, as if trying to quench an unquenchable thirst.
But it did nothing to calm the burning inside him.
Upstairs, Demi quietly slipped out of Orion’s room.
She had read him eight or nine fairy tales without stopping, and her throat was parched.
She went downstairs and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge, finally easing the dryness in her mouth.
It was late. After thinking it over, Demi decided to crash in the guest room upstairs and leave in the morning.
But-
As she opened the door to the guest room, someone suddenly grabbed her from behind.
“Demi…”
“Hah…”
A man’s arms locked tightly around her, his head resting on her shoulder, warm breath hitting the side of her face.
Demi froze, angry and startled, and tried to break free.
“Nevin! Let go of me!”
She could smell the red wine on his breath.
“Demi, I’m not going to let you divorce me…”
Nevin’s mind was clear, but something primal had been set off. He leaned in and started kissing
her neck.
Demi’s cheeks flushed, though she wasn’t sure if it was from anger or something else.
Annoyed by her protests, Nevin grabbed her face and pressed his lips to hers.
“Mm!”

He thought back over what happened and sat there in a daze before getting up to get dressed.
“Good morning, Mr. Blackwell.”
Helga had breakfast ready, and Orion had already gone to school.
“She…”
“Mrs. Blackwell left early this morning,” Helga answered.
She didn’t mention that Demi had left before dawn.
“Okay.”
Nevin had no appetite. He freshened up, changed, and went to the office.
Knock knock.
