Chapter 6 Thank Her? Really?

Five minutes later, the black SUV raced down the road toward the hospital.

In the back seat, Nevin sat rigid and silent. His cold gaze fixed on the woman in his arms.

When Demi’s eyelids trembled, he noticed immediately.

Demi, wake up.”

Demi slowly opened her eyes, catching the faint, cool scent of Nevin’s cologne.

She was sitting on his lap, leaning against his chest.

The moment her eyes met his, she saw a flicker of surprisemaybe even reliefbefore it quickly faded.

How did you-he started, but the joy in his tone vanished as soon as he saw the look in her eyes.

There was nothing but coldness in hers.

Without hesitation, Demi pushed herself off him and moved to the side, keeping a clear distance.

Nevin frowned, thinking she was still being dramatic and playing her little games.

Demi, seriously? How old are you? You knew you were allergic and still refused to go to the hospital. Instead, you had to faint right in front of me and Orion! What, you wanted us to panic and run around. you all day before you’d finally be happy?

Nevin’s voice was sharp. Maybe it was Demi’s cold attitude these past few days that pushed him over the edge. He’d meant to sound concerned, but the words came out like a scolding.

Her hands tightened into fists on her lap. Her pale face turned toward the window, refusing to look at him.

Nevin grew angrier with that reaction. He grabbed her chin and forced her to face him.

Talk to me! You’d rather hurt yourself just to get attention? Orion and I are taking you to the hospital right now. What’s with this icequeen act?

Demi clenched her jaw and slapped his hand away. She let out a tired, mocking laugh. Hurt myself to get your attention? Did you forget I’m allergic to floral scents, or are you just pretending not to know?

Nevin’s brow furrowed tight. His already darkened face turned grim. His eyes looked at her the way someone looks at a child throwing a tantrum.

Forget it.

What the point to argue with him anyway?

Demi suddenly felt drained. Talking to him was useless. At this point, nothing mattered anymore.

Sensing the two pairs of eyes on her, Demi lifted her head.

In the front seat, Rhea sat looking innocent, as if watching a harmless scene unfold. Orion was nestled in

her arms.

When Demi looked at him, he pouted in annoyance, as if blaming her for making a fuss and disturbing

everyone.

Neither of themher husband nor her sonseemed worried about her at all. Instead, they looked like they thought she had faked her fainting spell to get attention.

Worse. Orion was clinging to Rhea, silently protecting her, afraid his mother might lash out at her.

Demi, are you okay?

Rhea’s eyes filled with tears as if she deeply cared. She offered Demi a bottle of water, her voice soft and gentle. Don’t be scared, Demi. We’ll be at the hospital soon. Mr. Blackwell, Orion, and I will stay with you.

Smack!

Demi ruthlessly slapped her hand away.

Rhea let out a quiet gasp. pretending to endure the pain. A red mark spread across her hand, making her look even more fragile.

Mom! Why do you always bully Rhea?Orion’s young voice rose sharply in anger. I don’t like you anymore!

He grabbed Rhea’s hand and blew on it carefully. There, there, Rhea. The pain’s all gonepoof!

Demi’s lips trembled. She shut her eyes, saying nothing.

The scene before her felt like a blade stabbing straight into her chest.

When Orion was little, he loved to climb and run around. Scraped knees and bruised elbows were part of every day.

Whenever that happened, the tiny boy would pout, tears in his big eyes, and run into her arms, crying softly.

And Demi would always blow on his little wound. There, sweetie. Mommy blew it away. All better now.

Just like that, his tears would stop. He’d hug her tight, whisper something silly, and go back to playing.

But now

Watching her beloved son cared for by another woman like his mother, Demi felt the bitter sting of irony cut deep into her heart.

Nevin and Orion didn’t notice the smug satisfaction in Rhea’s eyes, nor the challenge she silently threw at Demi when their gazes met.

It’s okay, Orion,Rhea said sweetly. It doesn’t hurt anymore. Your mom didn’t mean it.

Rhea’s eyes were red as she let Orion tug at her sleeve a few times. Then she hid her hands behind her back, glancing up at Nevin with a pitiful look.

Demi,” Nevin’s tone was sharp and impatient, apologize to Rhea.”

She turned to him, stunned.

You want methe victimto apologize to her?She let out a bitter laugh. She caused my allergic. reaction. Should I be thanking her for that too?

Rhea had once been her assistant; Demi had personally trained her.

There was no way she didn’t know about her flower allergy.

Back at the villa, Demi had already noticed the faint floral scent in the air. She could tell something was off, but she still ended up passed out cold.

Mr. Blackwell, please don’t force Demi to apologize,Rhea said softly, forcing a faint, trembling smile.

She just misunderstood me. I don’t want her to think worse of me.

Stop defending her!Nevin’s eyes turned cold. You’re just too forgiving.”

Demi caught the meaning behind his words. So, now he thought I was the problem? That he’d been too nice to me?

Once again, he chose Rhea’s side.

And what does that make me?

A sudden pain tightened across her stomach. Her hand instinctively moved to protect her belly.

My baby!

She pressed her lips together, refusing to say another word.

The air in the car was heavy and silent. Thankfully, they reached the hospital in no time. Nevin stepped out first.

Demi,Rhea said gently, her tone dripping with fake concern, your health is the most important thing. Don’t put on a spite and end up hurting yourself.

Her words were soft, but each syllable carried hidden mockery. Young Orion didn’t catch it.

Orion thought Rhea was being kind, still caring about his mom despite all that.

Demi’s face turned pale again. She pressed a hand over her stomach and gave Rhea a cold, steady look. I was foolish enough to help you back then. And now, I’m the one paying for it.”
